java applet on CentOS-3
Hey,
Has anyone installed a java applet on a CentOS-3?
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/ASP/contribs/9/i386/j2re-java-plugin-1.4.2_02-1asp.i386.html
I need a java applet for some functionality accessing
my SmoothWall firewall from a workstation on the
internal network.
Has anyone set YUM up to watch for updates?
Thanks,
Rick

Installing Java 1.4.2
For scalix on Centos the Scalix forum provides instructions for
convincing Scalix that Centos is Redhat:
http://www.scalix.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=516&highlight=centos
I am up to the point of getting Java JDK1.4.2 installed.
I did a: yum list|grep "java" and got:
gcc-java.i386 3.4.4-2
installed

...ure.
In order to get help.start() working in this scenario, you need to
download the gcc 3.2 compiled versions of Java from one of the
Blackdown.org mirrors at:
http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux/mirrors.html
Once at the mirror of your choice, go into the JDK-1.4.1/i386/01 folder.
Download:

INSTALL-j2re
README
Be sure to read the README and INSTALL-j2re files carefully and fully.
The .bin file is the install executable and you of course, need to
change the file attributes to make it executable after download. Note
that by default this file will extra...

R search engine broken (PR#6653)
Full_Name: St?phane Gourichon
Version: R 1.7.1 (2003-06-16).
OS: GNU/Linux
Submission from: (NULL) (132.227.205.226)
The HTML help is great. But the search engine is broken.
It used to work in Galeon 1.x, not Konqueror 3.0 .
Now it doesn't work, neither on Mozilla 1.6 / Firebird 0.6 / Firefox 0.8 nor
Konqueror 3.2 which are IMHO the latest versions of those advanced,
standard-compliant

Java
Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie to centos and having trouble upgrading java's jdk1.4 to jdk1.5.
I assume I have to get the jdk from jpackage, but I'm having trouble
locating it, let alone finding any instructions on how to upgrade. Much
appreciated if anyone can help. Thanks!

Recommendation On Ping And Alert Tool
A bit off topic, but I keep looking for an answer to this question and
coming up with nothing... so I thought I would go to the gurus. :-)
Can anyone recommend a good package for pinging other devices and sending
an email/alert when they go down? I'm aware of all kinds of more complex
things with GUIs and a zillion other bells and whistles we aren't looking
for, but we just want a simple

Can't get JRE to install so that FireFox sees it
Hot on the heels of the success of getting sound to work with FireFox, I
am on to getting Java applets to run.
When I go to a page with a Java applet, I get the little Rubik's cube-
like icon that says I can click to download. So I do, but FireFox says
it can't find it, so I have to install manually.
I click on Manual install and I'm taken to a page that allows me to
download the RPM

mozilla/firefox search engine AMD64 jre1.5 plugin linux
...fedora 4 on 64bit and R2.1.1
When I start the search engine, I had the message that the java plugin
was missing.
So I try to install manual the java run time jre-1.5 for the AMD64, but
the plugin was missing
So I instaled the J2RE blackdown 1.4.2
I obtain the plugin for the 64bit and make the link.
When I restart R and the search engine, the plugin 1.4.2 correctly
reconnize by mozilla
( about:plugins in the URL windows), and I don't have any more the
message for the missing
plugin, but, then I try a search, mozilla fr...

Do you have any logfile output? First check whether the environment
(JAVA_HOME for example) is set before calling

ISSUES WITH R -------------
The R "Installation and administration" document tells us that "Sun's
Java Run-time Environment j2re 1.4.2_02 does not work under Linux". Prof
Ripley said on 1 April 2004 that "if Linux/Unix, Sun JRE 1.4.2_02/3/4 are

1.4.2_03 and find that all their other applets work fine. (Though I'm sure

The latest Sun Java release is jre-1_5_0, and unlike the recent versions

Java installation problem.
I downloaded the jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin files and then
run it as ./jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin.
It resulted in an rpm file. and then i used
rpm -iv jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586-rpm
Everything went fine and I didn't get any error.
But when I do
java -version ......i don't get any output.
I would like to know whether java is installed on my system or not.
PS: I have
