[ipxe-devel] Remove gpxe or replace with ipxe?

Syslinux 5 (i)pxelinux.0 unnecessary PATH requests
Hi there, i just build a new ipxelinux.0 with an EMBED=../../syslinux-5/core/pxelinux.0. i'm trying to load up my vesamenu.c32 menu from http:. and offcorse i want this as optimal as possible, with the least needed GET requests. OLD situation with v4: PXE ROM -> ipxelinux.0 (tftp) -> menu.php (http) -> vesamenu.c32 (http)...

syslinux.efi does not seem to support HTTP like lpxelinux.0 does?
Hello everybody, I been using lpxelinux.0 with legacy boot to load KERNEL over http instead of tftp and I want to switch to efi boot. Thank you for the great tech! However it seems the syslinux.efi does not support HTTP / IP? How can I get efi boot load syslinux with an IP stack? # dpkg -S /usr/lib/SYSLINUX.EFI/efi64/syslinux.efi syslinux-efi: /usr/lib/SYSLINUX.EFI/efi64/syslinux.efi # dpkg

lpxelinux.0 - 6.02 - failed to load ldlinux.c32
...use it, as i don?t reach the point where the debug module will be available.. it just pulls the lpxelinux.0 and tries to get the next download-- the ldlinux.c32 and it fails...and freezes. And the next step would be other modules i think.. if i?m wrong.. excuse me 8-).. yesterday i managed to get ipxelinux working from ipxe.org.. so the nic should work. I used the undionly.kpxe on all models and it worked.. so i think it should be possible to fix this with lpxelinux.0.. Ipxe was just a test, but what i really want is lpxelinux as my menus and te system behind are syslinux based 8-).. the ipxe guys...

Confusion on lpxelinux vs. gpxelinux vs. ipxe vs gpxe.

gpxelinux.0 and slow HTTP performance on VMware ESX
...irtual machines. I would like to point out that the gPXE git seems to be abandoned by it's developers because of an argument with the person that owns the domain names and that they continued the work under an new name iPXE. Maybe it would be a good idea to use iPXE and let the next version be iPXElinux. Hopefully they already fixed this bug also. regards, Leon Straathof.

Memory usage with memdisk vs initrd a squashfs
Question, Some Linux distributions I support show two approaches for pxe booting them. One uses memdisk to boot an ISO file. The other uses pxelinux to boot kernel and initrd a squashfs file. I'm unfamiliar with the impact to memory either approach has. Like, does using memdisk permanently squirrel away a chunk of memory for the ISO file that the OS will be unable to use? Is using initrd to

Confusion on lpxelinux vs. gpxelinux vs. ipxe vs gpxe.
...ads under iPXE. My 10GigE test hardware typically sustains somewhere in the region of 2000-3000Mbps (CPU-limited, on a very old Core2Duo CPU). Any new iPXE driver developed commercially will be tested and expected to reach 1000Mbps or have good reasons for not doing so. You can construct an ipxelinux.0 as an updated replacement for gpxelinux.0, to solve the problems relating to the old gPXE code present in gpxelinux.0. However, there's not much motivation to do so. Instead, you should either use lpxelinux.0, or use iPXE itself. Michael

Syslinux 4.10-pre15: now release track
...XE to a bug in a specific iPXE driver, sky2. As such, I am hereby promoting Syslinux 4.10 to the stabilization track. One important bit which is still not there is to fix sanboot.c32 so that it can switch to an iPXE/gPXE SAN I'm still unclear if gpxelinux.0 should be removed or replaced with ipxelinux.0. It is no longer necessary for http or ftp, but is still needed for SAN support. -hpa -- H. Peter Anvin, Intel Open Source Technology Center I work for Intel. I don't speak on their behalf.

Memory usage with memdisk vs initrd a squashfs
...ent (an ISO might have extra unnecessary stuff like a copy of the kernel and initrd) and would load faster. In my experience TFTP with PXE tops out around 1 MB/s while an HTTP load can easily see 17MB/s or more. lpxelinux.0 (the lwIP-enabled PXELINUX for BIOS) can achieive this as can gpxelinux.0/ipxelinux.0 or PXELINUX ontop of gPXE/iPXE. You can also see this when loading the file after the kernel is booted which would often be a little bit faster than HTTP-capable PXELINUX. -- -Gene

SYSLINUX 6.03-pre18 crashes on Mellanox/Intel card with iPXE stack
...for the details. I wonder if this might be related to some troubles I've had recently with gpxelinux.0 where my VM on VMware Workstation has a CPU fault in a similar version range, starting around 5.02/5.10-pre2. Testing with iPXE ISO it works flawlessly. Sounds like my next test should be an ipxelinux.0. --Gene

Yossef, as I just mentioned about an hour ago, I've had mixed results. With an iPXE ISO, I've had no difficulties but hopefully about to try to test an ipxelinux.0. -- -Gene

pxechn.c32 for EFI
I'm looking for either a way of setting the root path - a Linux style "pivot_root" functionality, that would be perfect. Also a way of overriding prefixing the root path with a URL or some other acceptable syntax to designate to use a different TFTP server. That would really make PXELinux really versatile. Some people concerned about security may want a way of blocking that just

1 model out of a dozen hangs at "loading boot sector... booting..."
Hello, I am new to this list. We are trying to move away from our WDS server with PXElinux mods and are testing using iPXE on a linux box only. We mainly use HP but also have Dells, Panasonic, and Lenovo. On almost a dozen models tested now, everything works great. These were mostly laptops but a Dell Optiplex 360 and 380 booted fine. So far we have just had a problem with the HP 6005 Pro SFF
