IPtraf not looking right on the console..
I have a CentOS 4 server at home where we store all our data, I wanted to get some idea of the amount of traffic going into and out of the server by protocol so I installed IPtraf.. When I run it from an ssh session it looks fine but when I run it directly on the server console its doesn't look right at all.. It doesn't seem to layout correctly.. Is there something I need to do differently on the console to run it? Thanks..

Difference between tc reported rate and IPTraf Rate
I am using HTB+IMQ on an Ethernet bridge and tc for statistics reporting. I am finding that tc reported rate is about 5-10% less than that reported by IPTraf for the same traffic. Has anyone observed this before? Which is more accurate? Rajesh

Real time traffic monitor like iptraf
Hi, Just wondering, how you guys monitor traffic per ip to test if the traffic shaping is working? iptraf works great but no new version is available, and most ip accounting projects (MRTG & Friends) update its graphics on a per minute process. So I´d like to know which project you use to monitor bandwidth use in real time. Regards, Edo

ipsec for linux 2.4 eventually made easy?!
hi there, I just wanted to share a recent discovery I did on how to setup a secure VPN implementation for linux 2.4.x (I''m using 2.4.20 but it should be working, as far as documentation states, for > 2.4.18) without using FreeS/WAN. The tool (ipsec_tunnel: http://ringstrom.mine.nu/ipsec_tunnel/, by Tobias Ringström) is a kernel module based on ipip and ip_gre. It uses CyptoAPI to

Actual audio bitrates
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I was just measuring the bitrates of a couple of codecs via iax. I'm getting much higher numbers than expected, so maybe I'm doing something wrong? Measured with iptraf, values displayed are: codec: measured bitrate (bitrate according codec definition) gsm: 52 kbps (13 kpbs) alaw: 154 kbps (?) speex: 57 kpbs (24 kpbs) Seems a little high to me? - -- Regards, Tais M. Bandwidth monitoring tool
Hi. I am trying to shape my upstream bandwidth, mostly per port. and I am having some problems getting things to work the way I want them to. before I throw my configuration at you guys ;), I`d like to debug it by myself - but I was not able to find a tool that allow me to monitor current bandwidth usage per port (and preferably even per port+ip). I want to know what is the current bandwidth

Trying understand the HTB
...a Iptables masquerading rule to eth1 in the router machine . The NICs are 100 Mb/s. The host 1 has Apache 2 and a file with 670 MB (CD ISO image) to download. When I used wget to get http://10.1.0.1/file.iso from 192.168.10.11. Without tc the speed showed by wget was 9.15 M/s (= 73.2 Mbits/s). The iptraf confirmed it. Then I used these lines to control the traffic: tc qdisc del dev eth1 root tc qdisc add dev eth1 root handle 1: htb default 40 tc class add dev eth1 root classid 1:0 htb rate 10mbit tc class add dev eth1 parent 1:0 classid 1:40 htb rate 500kbit After tc rules, when I got file.iso, t...

SPOOLSV and XP PRO
Hi All I recently began having issues where there would be a runaway SMBD process listed in TOP, having a Pri of around 25, and using 70 to 95% CPU indefinitely. IPTRAF reports around 600kbps constantly in and out from the subject workstation, with nothing going on - on the workstation. This traffic is parallel to the runaway SMBD process ... the traffic dies when the SMBD process is eliminated. Issuing a kill command on it seems to have no affect -- it just ign...

Best way to manage a 128Kb/s pipe - help
..., but as far as I know it can''t be set up to burst to 128Kbs if it was available. - Is the best option for HTTP limiting. Q4. What is the best real time bandwidth usage tool. (i.e. I measure all incoming and out-going traffic on the Internet interface (eth0) using "IPTRAF" which works great but is there a real-time web interface or a better tool than "Iptraf" Thanks in Advance Steven

esfq testing !
...v/null $TC qdisc add dev eth1 root handle 1:0 esfq perturb 0 hash dst $TC class show dev eth1 $TC qdisc show dev eth1 $TC filter show dev eth1 -------------------------------------------- And it shows me: qdisc esfq 1: quantum 1514b hash: dst Next, I make test from server to LAN hosts, and put iptraf in order to make measures. when I do: # nohup ping 192.168.1.3 -f & (a LAN HOST) # nohup ping 192.168.1.6 -f & (other LAN HOST) iptraf shows me equal bandwidth to that hosts. but if I repeat pings for one of that hosts: # nohup ping 192.168.1.6 -f & (other LAN HOST) # nohup p...

smbd's using up 100% of all cpu's and load avg slowly going up
Hi, Running samba sernet 4.1.6-7, I've noticed the load avg slowly / steadily creeping up (.e.g > 100). I'm now noticing that several smbd processes are at 100%. I don't actually notice that much bandwidth usage on the system (e.g. iptraf/iftop). Any idea what's causing this? Restarting smbd helps for a few days, but then the high load avg returns. Thanks, Sabuj

tc show error for ingress
Hi, I am trying to do both ingress and egress bandwidth management on a bridge. eth0 is the WAN interface. IPTraf shows that the following script is running successfully and it limits bandwidth both ways to 256 KB However when I want to see the statistics using tc - it only shows me stats for htb class and not for ingress class. The tc output is as follows: tc -s -d class show dev eth0 class htb 1:1 root pri...

NAT-aware traffic analysis
I have tried using iptraf for my NAT firewall to analyse the IP traffic. Details :- Supposed : eth0 -...

other repositories question
Hello. I would like to know how other repositories than the official ones for CentOS 4 affect an update of a package if a package is present in both repositories. Will yum install the package that it finds having the highest version number ? and if so, is there a mean to tell yum that we would like to keep the preference to one repository instead of the highest version number on a possibly
