The zpool configuration was one storage zpool with 3 vdevs of 8 disks in RAIDZ2. The OI installation is absolutely clean. Just next-next-next until done. Good to know about the HPE and Dell "gotchas", thanks to those who posted. I can speak to SuperMicro (11 systems, mostly X9 and X10). I have a current RELENG_7 running on: http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/4U/7045/SYS-7045B-TR+.cfm with the -3+ IPMI card. I can interact with the BIOS, etc, but no joy once we get past the loader. Anyone have ideas?
