Samba WINS issues over VPN
...provides a tool called "nblookup" for doing NetBios name lookups by querying a name server. You can optionally specify the WINS server if the client is not configured to use one, or it you want to query a different WINS server. e.g nblookup SOMEMACHINE nblookup -s IP_OF_WINS_SERVER SOMEMACHINE http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830578 If the XP laptop is connected directly to the corporate LAN, nblookup works fine. If the XP laptop is connected via VPN, then nblookup fails, even if I specify the wins server IP address. I tried this with both the current WINS server...

We use an IPSec client VPN to allow users with Windows 7 laptops to connect to the office remotely. The windows 7 laptops are joined to the Samba domain. Password expiration policies are enforced. When you login to

Win2k seems to work ok. XP doesn't. It cannot find the servers with search. What are

...t; List-Archive: http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba/ My guess is you just need to set up one of those samba servers as a WINS server (``wins support = yes'' in your smb.conf), and point all of your SMB clients (windows and the other samba server) to it. (For samba, set ``wins server = IP_of_WINS_server'' in smb.conf; windows machines can be pointed to the WINS server via DHCP or manually in the network device config.) Normally windows boxes use broadcasts to figure out which machine (ie, which IP) has a given NetBIOS name. These broadcasts don't work across subnets. A WINS server...
