R (unix) command line editing for native speakers of vi
As an inveterate user of vi, I was pleased to stumble on how
to use it for editing R commands.
When an interactive R session is launched under unix, the
command line editor most likely defaults to emacs. Typing
<esc>,<ctrl>+j will switch this to vi editing mode (see below
for possible exceptions)...

Cleaning up part 2.
...After getting a couple of replies suggesting "make clean" again, I blew
away the entire directory, reinstalled the sources, reset the paths, and
first did a normal "make". Then I followed that with "make clean". That
worked.
I probably corrupted something in my inveterate tinkering. Sorry to waste
bandwidth.
