Mirror config and installgrub errors
I''ve hsut bought second drive for my hope PC and decided to do mirror. I''ve made
pfexec zpool attach rpool c9d0s0 c13d0s0
waited for scrub and tried to install grub on second disk:
$ pfexec installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c13d0s0
cannot open/stat device /dev/rdsk/c13d0s2
$ pfexec installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c13d0
raw device must be a root slice (not s2)

errors: No known data errors
Today I went to activate the BE for the new snv_127 install that I''ve been manually booting into, but "beadm activate..." will always fail, see here:
root at arc:~# export BE_PRINT_ERR=true
root at arc:~# beadm activate opensolaris-snv127
be_do_installgrub: installgrub failed for device c2t0d0s0.
Unable to activate opensolaris-snv127.
Unknown external error.
So I tried the installgrub manually and get this:
root at arc:~# installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0s0
cannot open/stat device /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0s2
OK, wtf? The rpo...

Expanding a root pool
I''m attempting to expand a root pool for a VMware VM that is on an 8GB virtual disk. I mirrored it to a 20GB disk and detached the 8GB disk. I did "installgrub" to install grub onto the second virtual disk, but I get a kernel panic when booting. Is there an extra step I need to perform to get this working?
Basically I did this:
1. Created a new 20GB virtual disk.
2. Booted into the VM.
3. Created a Solaris partition covering the whole virtual disk....

zpool upgrade wrecked GRUB
Machine is running x86 snv_94 after recent upgrade from opensolaris 2008.05. ZFS and zpool reported no troubles except suggesting upgrade for from ver.10 to ver.11. seemed like a good idea at the time. system up for several days after that point then took down for some unrelated maintenance.
now will not boot the opensol, drops to grub prompt, no menus.
zfs was mirrored on two disks c6d0s0 and

How to resize ZFS partion or add a new one?
Hi,
I have the following partions on my laptop, Inspiron 6000, from fdisk:
1 Other OS 0 11 12 0
2 EXT LBA 12 2561 2550 26
3 Active Solaris2 2562 9728 7167 74
First one is for Dell utilities. Second one is NTFS and the third is ZFS.
I am currently using OpenSolaris 2009.06

RePartition OS disk, give some to zpool
I''ve got knee deep into learning how to use Opensolaris and zfs, and I
see now that my goal of home zfs server may have been better served if
I had partitioned the install disk leaving some of the 60GB to be
added to a zpool.
First, how much space does a working OS need. I don''t mean bare
minimum but to be comfortable and have some growing room (on the
install disk)?

booting from ashift=12 pool..
.. evidently doesn''t work. GRUB reboots the machine moments after
loading stage2, and doesn''t recognise the fstype when examining the
disk loaded from an alernate source.
This is with SX-151. Here''s hoping a future version (with grub2?)
resolves this, as well as lets us boot from raidz.
Just a note for the archives in case it helps someone else get back

ZFS Upgrade
Dear list,
I''m about to upgrade a zpool from 10 to 29 version, I suppose that
this upgrade will improve several performance issues that are present
on 10, however
inside that pool we have several zfs filesystems all of them are
version 1 my first question is is there a problem with performance or
any other problem if you operate a zpool 29 with zfs filesystems
version 1 ?
Is it better

rpool recover not using zfs send/receive
...is recreate the rpool and underlying zfs filesystems (rpool/ROOT, rpool/s10_uXXXXXX, rpool/dump, rpool/swap, rpool/export, and rpool/export/home). I then mount the pool at a alternate root and restore the tar archive. Lastly, I set the zpool bootf option to the correct zfs filesystem and run the installgrub command. I have not had any luck so far.

expand zfs for OpenSolaris running inside vm
hello, all
I am have constraint disk space (only 8GB) while running os inside vm. Now i
want to add more. It is easy to add for vm but how can i update fs in os?

separate home "partition"?
(i use the term loosely because i know that zfs likes whole volumes better)
when installing ubuntu, i got in the habit of using a separate partition for my home directory so that my data and gnome settings would all remain intact when i reinstalled or upgraded.
i''m running osol 2008.11 on an ultra 20, which has only two drives. i''ve got all my data located in my home directory,

Killing an EFI label
...to be necessary to manually set up partitions
(slices). At least, without doing that, I couldn''t attach the disk to
my zpool, which was my goal. Am I missing something?
And, when manually setting up partitions, I have no idea if what I did
is right. Well, a bit of idea; I know that installgrub did NOT
overwrite anything that a scrub detected, so that means I left enough
blank space somewhere. Not sure it''s the right place, though. Did I
have to do this? Every way I tried to avoid this resulted in failure to
attach, but none of the instructions listed this step.

sharing a ssd between rpool and l2arc
Hi,
as Richard Elling wrote earlier:
"For more background, low-cost SSDs intended for the boot market are
perfect candidates. Take a X-25V @ 40GB and use 15-20 GB for root
and the rest for an L2ARC. For small form factor machines or machines
with max capacity of 8GB of RAM (a typical home system) this can make a
pleasant improvement over a HDD-only implementation."

cloning disk with zpool
...ww.opensolaris.org/os/community/zfs/boot/
But unfortunately this doesn''t work, and we do have no clue what could be wrong
on c1d0 you have a zfs root
create a mirror of this disk:
zpool attache rootpool c1d0 c2d0
wait that it construct c2d0
zpool offline
#install the grub
/usr/sbin/installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 c2d0
shut down
remove the disk c1d0 and place the disk on c2d0 in c1d0
boot in failsafe
clean the zpool
zpool import rootpool
zpool rootpool c1d0 #(yeah I know this look strange because
at that time we have a zpool status saying that the zpool is constitued...

power disruption
I was in the process of installing a new disk.
zpool attach -f rpool old new
then I was supposed to do
installgrub stage1 stage2 new
but I went away and there had been a power disruption and now the BE will not load at all. I have an older be which works (2008.11 and knows nothing about the new disk)
is there a way to fix things? i cannot unmount the current/old BE while it is active.
thanks everybody.

zfs-discuss Digest, Vol 58, Issue 117
...on x86)
You can do it, but it''s a pain. Basically you have to boot in single-user, mount your ZFS on an alternate root, clear out and rebuild the /dev disk links, and fix up grub.
When you boot, grub should show you 4 boot choices, if you only see two, I''ll be you forgot to run installgrub against the new disk?

Problems installing grub
...ives on this server died the other day, so I got a replacement that was 1 cylinder larger (60798 vs 60797). Still, I tried
prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c7d0s2 | fmthard -s - /dev/rdsk/c6d0s2
zpool replace worked and the pool resilvered within a few minutes. Now, installing grub fails.
root at prv-backup:~# installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c6d0s0
Partition 0 of the disk has an incorrect offset
Unable to gather device information for /dev/rdsk/c6d0s0
Can thie be because of a bad partition table? Any idae how to fix this properly?
