AACPlus Shoutcast v1.90
> hmmm.. very interesting.. any info on how they've done the licensing ?
No idea how the licensing works. If it's free for the streamer then
that may destroy Vorbis's inroads into streaming.
I'm hoping that Monty and others can improve Vorbis to start competing
with AAC+ at low bitrates. Monty said he had some ideas but I wonder if
anything is being worked on presently.

FastCGI on IIS
Has anyone tried using Rails (or PHP or whatever) on IIS lately? There
is a FastCGI extention for IIS 5.1 and 6.0 [1], backported from IIS7 if
I understand correctly. I''m curious if anyone thinks this would work in
production and give Rails a decent inroad for IIS-based shops. It seems
to perform [2] but I would like some verification from the community at
large before I mention the "R" word at work again. :)

[RFC] Turn the MachineOutliner on by default in AArch64 under -Oz
Hello
A 4.4% geomean codesize improvement is really impressive. That stuff is hard to come by, you usually have to nibble away at it bit at a time. I ran some codesize benchmarks we have and they were in the same ballpark. Some of these are quite small so had less opportunity for outlining, but the average was still over 3% with some as high as 9-10%.
All the tests I ran were fine, although we

A Nightmare on Rails Street: Windows Lives!
Just spent 40+ hours in two days deploying my app on Windows 2000. Not
all the time was Apache/MySql related, but a significant portion was.
What a nightmare that was. Unfortunately, the customer is dead-set on
"standardizing" by using Windows. So, as I sat there between a Linux
box and an AIX box working on this thing, I ran into problems, part of
which were:
CGI was slow (Dell

AACPlus Shoutcast v1.90
Just so you know the what's happening with the competition,
Nullsoft has released Shoutcast DSP v1.90 supporting AACPlus encoding
for free.
http://www.shoutcast.com/downloads/shoutcast-dsp-1-9-0-windows.exe
The shoutcast website hasn't been updated yet.
You need Winamp v5.1 which includes the AAC+ encoder DLL.

Ross.

Call for Beta Testers: R+ (read R plus) for Solaris and L inux:
...member that the "free" in
"free software" is as in "freedom" rather than as in beer (as far as GPL is
concern, at least).
Having commercial support for R may not be a bad thing: It may well help
adaptation in the corporate world. (Linux probably would not have made
inroads into large corps if not for companies providing commercial support
for it.) It would be great if those who profited from R can contribute back
to the project in some way.
Just my $0.02...

amazon ec2 and centos?
Searching through the archives, it seems this topic has come up
several times in the past 2.5 years. Did anyone ever take on the
tasks of creating an official CentOS AMI?
We're currently using the RightScale ones, but I think it'd be ideal
to have a clean CentOS AMI with the current kernels.
Karanbir, you seem to have been the one on CentOS side who has had

incorrect password
Hello list,
Currently I have upgraded again to Linux-Mandrake 7.0. I don't think I'll
upgrade anytime soon. Nonetheless, I have made tremendous inroads with Samba.
With RedHat 6.0, I could not get the Linux box to show in Windows Networking
Neighborhood; now I can visually see it and it prompts for a password. Cool, I
said no! It's just a password issue and I have it fixed in no time. Well, I am
still trouble shooting.
Here are one tangi...

Slow Samba - Winbind - NT PDC - low bandwidth - Why slow lookups?
...for UNC shares.
There is little difference in server hardware and there are no ethernet
issues. Enumeration is off
I am thinking that the problem is in the propogation delay of PDC or
WINS data from the remote site to either the local PDC or the corporate
run WINS system. I made (possibly) small inroads by turning off trusted
domains in smb.conf and setting an environment variable (that escapes me
at the moment) that restricts winbind to looking for only the domain I
want information from.
Creating lmhosts entries in the Samba box for the PDC and all other
servers in the domain made no percepti...

does that mean .o generated with gcc (.c -> .s and .s -> .o) will not
contain llvm ir?
i meant, final kernel bitcode ir arch independent and can be JIT with
any arch-specific backend. Is it not the case?

I lost the RSpec fight
I''ve been working on a Rails project with one other developer; he was
using Test::Unit, and I was using RSpec. That works OK for a while, but
obviously it starts causing pain when you have to check in two places to
see if a piece of code is properly tested/spec''d, you can''t use TextMate
shortcuts to switch back and forth between code and test, you have to

3510 JBOD ZFS vs 3510 HW RAID
Hi there
Is it fair to compare the 2 solutions using Solaris 10 U2 and a commercial database (SAP SD scenario).
The cache on the HW raid helps, and the CPU load is less... but the solution costs more and you _might_ not need the performance of the HW RAID.
Has anybody with access to these units done a benchmark comparing the performance (and with the pricelist in hand) came to a conclusion.
