"inotify_handler No data on inotify fd?"
I've got a samba server that's occasionally spewing inotify errors. The classic, "smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler No data on inotify fd?" type errors solved by kernel change notify = false Now, everything is working perfectly on this box unless one or two users leave files open from specific machines (this is as far as I can tell, it's hard to get good info from the users sometimes, but it's wh...

Samba crashes & floods logfiles: "smbd/notify_inotify.c:244(inotify_handler) - No data on inotify fd?!"
...ackage Samba 3.4.3) approx. 8 months ago, I have encountered 3 or 4 times a severe crash of Samba. What happens is that all over a sudden Samba floods /var/log/messages and /var/log/warn with the following message (cropped out date/time/servername, etc.): smbd[19724]: smbd/notify_inotify.c:244(inotify_handler) smbd[19724]: No data on inotify fd?! This message is being repeated until those 2 logfiles have filled up the /var partition. Samba is not responsive anymore and due to a filled up /var the whole server is malfunctioning. The only remedy that I had until today is to reboot the server and d...

Samba Error fills logs
Ello -- I'm having an issue using Samba 3.0.25b on Linux 2.6.22.7 (Also had it occur, though more frequently with 3.0.25) where the log file will be filled to disk capacity with : [2008/02/20 11:30:58, 0] smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(234) No data on inotify fd?! [2008/02/20 11:30:58, 0] smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(234) No data on inotify fd?! [2008/02/20 11:30:58, 0] smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(234) No data on inotify fd?! inotify trouble
Hello there This morning our main Samba server was pretty unresponsive running at a 30+ load average. After digging a bit what I found in the logs was the following. No data on inotify fd?! [2008/01/21 07:02:59, 0] smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(234) That entry appears a billion zillion times in the log file until the file system is filled up leaving no space on the device and sending samba into oblivion. Anyone knows what is causing this? I never had that before having run a lot of different samba versions. I also found a couple o...

212GB log file generated for a workstation
Had a server fill up completely with a samba workstation log file. The log file repeatedly had this information [2010/04/29 04:00:01, 0] smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(240) No data on inotify fd?! about a billion times. In my smb.conf Ihave max log size = 50 set, so I was hoping the log file wouldn't get that big.

smbd problem with inotify
..., the program is not closing properly, it doesn't respond and it simply hangs. User has to kill program's process manually. Meanwhile on samba server corresponding smbd process consumes about 100% of cpu and fills hard disk with bunch of such user's log: "smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(234) No data on inotidy df?!" Such log grows up very fast, and quickly consumes whole hard disk volume. I haven't found any satisfying information concernig the meaning of this log. I have been trying to manage this annoying problem. I took following steps: 1. I've raised number...

Samba logs fill up disk with inotify errors, smbd 100% CPU
...he samba configuration file indicates that logs should be limited to 1000K, one of the machine specific logs (/var/log/samba/log.machine_xyz.old) grows to the point of entirely filling the disk (140 GB of log). The log file contains endless repetitions of the same message: smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(240) No data on inotify fd?! At the same time, the smbd process for the user related to the faulty machine log uses 100% CPU, and must be stopped with kill -9. Note that it not always the same machine that creates the problem. Because some users are never affecting the system, we tried to ident...

inotify trouble
Ello -- For the past few months our Samba installation, currently at Version 3.0.28 has filling the log. file with [2008/04/17 13:25:30, 0] smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(234) No data on inotify fd?! This is started to happen almost weekly and it continues to output those lines until the log partition is full, then leaves a single process spiked to 100% until I kill it. There is nothing out of the ordinary in the log. file prior to mass error output. Ho...

inotify error and a file opened 1000+ times on a Samba share
...office complained that On-screen Takeoff would occasionally lose access to the database. I came in and found a couple strange symptoms. First, in /var/log/messages, Samba is spewing dozens of times per second: Mar 3 17:18:30 localhost smbd[5556]: [2010/03/03 17:18:30, 0] smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(249) Mar 3 17:18:30 localhost smbd[5556]: No data on inotify fd?! Second, lsof shows over a thousand concurrent connections to "Projects.ldb". From what I can see, this looks like the same problem that Excel occasionally causes. I have included "kernel change notify = no&q...

how to get Windows to notice unix-based delete command (inotify)
Hi there We have a Samba-based "upload server" where people put files to be processed. Anyway, when they upload files, a Unix-based script runs and moves the files off. However, the Windows explorer app doesn't "notice" the removal, and the user still sees the files. If they F5/refresh explorer, the files indeed have disappeared. If I have two explorer windows open

PDC unreliable - Connection interruptions, many error messages
...======================================= 1. Why do I get all those error messages? 2. What do they mean? 3. Are they related with my symptoms? 4. How do I cure this? 5. Could it be that this is related with my other posting ("Samba crashes & floods logfiles: "smbd/notify_inotify.c:244(inotify_handler) - No data on inotify fd?!")? My smb.conf ======================================== (all default values and comments are cropped automatically by SWAT): [global] workgroup = SOMEGROUPNAME.SGN server string = max open files = 10000 add machine script = /usr/sbin/useradd...
