Need a quick, safe method to empty /home/user/Maildir/{.Junk, .Trash}
I have some (Thunderbird client, dovecot-1.0.13, Maildir) users who get an
appalling amount of spam-with-attachment, and it's causing backups to take
an inordinate amount of time.
I'll implement some quota and server-side spam management when I go to
dovecot-1.1, but in the meantime:

Are any plans for an API that would allow ZFS commands including

samba 4.0.6 getent group
Hello all listies.
I've got samba4.0.6 running on FreeBSD 9.1.
Joined W2K12 domain as member server.
running getent group I noticed it takes a long time to resolve groups.
The result is correct, but it is inordinately long.
With 3.6.13 on FreeBSD 9.1 the return is nearly instantaneous.
smb4.conf looks like this.
[global]
workgroup = TMS3
security = ADS
realm = TMS3.COM
encrypt passwords = yes
# idmap config DOMAIN : backend = rid
# idmap config DOMAIN : range = 10000 - 20000
# idmap config TMS3 :...

Spam in the list.
There is an inordinate amount of spam going to the Samba list lately.
Is there anything that can be done about that?

Fail2ban problem
If there is a serious power failure, eg during an electric storm,
and the internet goes down
then my CentOS-6.2 server seems to take an inordinate time, maybe forever,
to get past fail2ban.
It is as though there is an extremely long - maybe an hour - timeout
if fail2ban cannot connect to the internet.
(I usually stop the machine with the power-button,
re-boot into a different OS (Fedora) and

Very slow initial opening MS-Word and MS-Excel files from Samba
The first time a Word or Excel file is opened, i.e., when either Word or
Excel have not been actively running "recently" (like, say for several
minutes or more), the time it takes to start the application and load
the file seem inordinately long.
Once the first evolution is complete, files open more-or-less instantly
if I close the first document but leave either app running (but void of
any open documents). This pertains to the same file opened a second
time, or different files -- once Word/Excel has done whatever it is

It is not an infinite loop but it does go on for an inordinately long
time. Does anyone here recognize what is happening and can provide me
with an explanation?

-u updating too liberally
Hey ho.
I apologize for what must be a stupid question, but I couldn't find
any relevant posts in the archives.
I want a daily backup of my home directory to another machine.
Because I never delete any file, no matter how bloody useless, my home
directory is inordinately large. So, it is important that I only back
up those files that really need to be backed up.
Here is the command I have been playing with.
rsync -Cavuz -e ssh /home/ twoface:/backups/pw/home/
However, it seems I am mis-using the -u option, or something. For
instance, when I add the -n option...

Windows 7 Clients Slow/Unresponsive with some file types
I am having some unresponsive and very slow performance with a couple of
different file types with Samba and Windows 7 clients.
The problems manifest in the following manners:
IGES files, these are CAD files. When opening up certain IGES files from
the server, the application can take upwards of 10 minutes to open up the
file. If I copy the same file from the server to the desktop, the

chattr +T not implemented?
We run a third party application that creates an inordinate amount of
subdirectories in a single directory. To speed up I/O, I wanted to set
the T attribute on the directory that will hold the subdirectories. The
"chattr +T /usr/local/lepus-bb/a-0607" command returns status 0, but
when I verify the setting, the attribute isn't there:
# lsattr -d /usr/local/lepus-bb/a-0607

Optimizing Samba
Hello All,
I have put together a Samba PDC for a mixed Bag of Windows Client
workstations. We have a few Windwos 9x, some Win NT 4.0 and a handful of
Windows 2000 workstations. The server is operating fine as a PDC for all
workstations, all the permissions are properly set and things are running
mostly smoothly.
There are a few things that are somewhat slow moving on the network.

LDAP connection leak?
I've set up Samba 3 as a PDC/BDC with LDAP. Yesterday we upgraded from
3.0.1 to 3.0.2rc1, which fixed some client-to-client problems we were
having. Shortly after midnight this morning the PDC stopped--the
general syslog logs, the LDAP log, and the Samba logs. The only process
that seems to continue is NTP, which after start-up does nothing NSS or
PAM-related. This leads me to think slapd

New sounds also now in CVS
The soundfiles I submitted earlier today have been cleaned up, and
added to the Digium CVS server in a more formal manner. Also, some
of the really bad formatting in my .txt description file has been
rectified. All of the sounds on my website are now on the Digium
site, and I will be submitting future changes via patches to Digium
for additional sounds.
Ideas welcome for more text; I may
