Howto: Java Plugin for Firefox 3.0.1?
...one here give me the magic decoder ring recipe for getting jre "plugged" into Firefox 3.0.1? The plugins directory is gone and the Firefox FAQ regarding this issue cryptically mentions that plugin support has been dropped. It then points one to a early adopter SUN jre1.6-10 page that has innumerable dependencies which my version of CentOS-5.2 does not meet. Firefox 3.0.0 had a plugins directory and it did support the logical link plugin: ls -s libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/java/default/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so I have no clue how to get java to work in FF3.0.1 at the moment. Any h...

How to copy a system?
...ferent partitions? I have two CentOS-5.6 machines, say A and B, and I thought I would copy / on sdb10 on machine A to an unused partition sda7 on machine B with rsync. I made the appropriate changes to /etc/fstab and grub.conf , as well as /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts , but found that there were innumerable errors when I booted machine B into the new system, mostly to do with creating dev's. Also the ethernet connection, which had been eth1 on A, was now eth0 on B, and this did not work. This was only a kind of experiment. There is a problem with the partition table on machine A, and I thought it...

...om front end to R, in one mode of the front end I dynamically load libR.so into a child worker thread. I'm very careful to make sure it is loaded by a single thread and loaded only once, but since it is a child thread it violates assumptions made by the stack size checking inside of R and I get innumerable errors along the lines of Error: C stack usage 140732526462740 is too close to the limit Digging through this email list (and I also found similar things out on google) I found the following advice from 2009 ---------------------------------------- SNIP -----------------------------------------...

extremly off topic I know but since it leaked into the list anyway....
...has been obvious all along, and pointed out repeatedly by strategic analysts, if anyone wants to cause immense damage in the US, including weapons of mass destruction, they are highly unlikely to launch a missile attack, thus guaranteeing their immediate destruction. There are innumerable easier ways that are basically unstoppable. But today's events will, very likely, be exploited to increase the pressure to develop these systems and put them into place. "Defense" is a thin cover for plans for militarization of space, and with good PR, even the flimsiest...

YASNPP - Yet Another Stupid Newbie Printing Problem
...peer-to-peer network of machines (3 * W98, 1 * Redhat7.1) with two printers (1 * HP6L, 1 * Lexmark Z22) hanging off the back of one of the W98 machines and have an odd problem. I am still a newbie with Linux, finally getting things up and running (sort of) after several weeks of fiddling around and innumerable reinstalls. I've finally seemed to have got Samba working-ish. My Windoze machines can see files on the Linux box and, for the most part, that's good enough for me. I do, however, have a need to print from the Linux box and it's this requirement that's causing grief. Please excuse m...

Tom''s Legacy
Dear Tom Thank you for the incredible personal effort you have put in over the years. Shorewall is an incredible achievement. It has helped me enormously in setting up my new business and securing my data centre ( at a price that I could afford!) Contrary to your opinion, it is also one of the best documented open source projects in existance, you are very talented at explaining complex

How to get R to compile with PNG support
...people download a binary of ours, or compile their own, whether R's plot and png functions work depends heavily on the rather obscure (to users) issue of exactly what headers are present on the compiling machine. Unfortunately, it is *very* unclear what actually needs to be present! There are innumerable places where this has come up for us, but http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/8868 and http://ask.sagemath.org/question/192/compiling-r-with-png-support are two of the current places where people have compiled information. The FAQ says, "Unless you do not want to view graphs on-screen y...

Rails' inflections are messy
Yesterday, I opened a GitHub Issue<https://github.com/rails/rails/pull/7071> about moving Rails inflections to an initializer. The idea wasn''t received well, understandably, as generating a large initializer with new Rails apps is pretty unappealing. However, the core members seemed open to the discussion of alternatives continuing here. For those of you not in the know,

rsyncssl
Hi, i`m wondering - can't THIS one http://gitweb.samba.org/?p=rsync-patches.git;a=blob;f=openssl-support.diff be completely replaced with THIS one ? http://dozzie.jarowit.net/trac/wiki/RsyncSSL http://dozzie.jarowit.net/git?p=rsync-ssl.git;a=tree Isn`t RsyncSSL (wrap rsync with stunnel via stdin/out) the better solution ? (as it is using a mature external program for the SSL stuff)
