upstart CentOS vs upstart Ubuntu is there any difference between them?

Starting service as non root user with puppet
Hi,
I have an ubuntu system with some of our own services on it. I prefer
to run
these services as a non-root user.
I can control the services using upstart as a non root user and can
start and
stop the service using initctl without any problems. I''m trying to use
puppet to
start and stop these services; however, it''s not obvious if it is
possible.
A suboptimal approach appears to be one in which I create a
service.conf file
in /etc/init - this service.conf file can su to the user and run the
service...

signal for shutdown in lxc driver
Hello!
Try to use libvirt with lxc.
I use latest centos6 amd64 as a libvirt host (libvirt from xen4 repo)
libvirt-daemon-1.2.15-3.el6.x86_64
In container I also use latest centos6 amd64. Container starts with
/sbin/init. CentOS 6 came with upstart as default init.
My problem is that I could not shutdown container correctly with libvirt.

C8 Question
Hi list,
I installed on my workstation C8.1 (1911) and performed a minimal
install and then installed XFCE from EPEL.
I noticed a strange behaviour (don't know if this is the wanted
default). If I try ,from normal user shell, to run command like "reboot"
or "shutdown -h now" system will reboot/shutdown. This happens on tty
console, on xfce terminal and ssh session.

[PATCH] open files in kjounald
Hello everybody!
As I wrote in my mail the previous week ("BUG: 2.4.19pre1 & journal_thread
& open filehandles") I followed the problem a little bit further.
Here's my patch; I beg the ext3-maintainers (Stephen, Andreas, Andrew) to
have a look at it and submit it to Marcelo and Linux for inclusion.
(2.4 is for now for me more important than 2.5).

No text output in login console and shell
...I enter the correct login and password, but the
shell that I get also shows only the blinking cursor and no text. I can
issue commands.
The server is in production and works ok. SSH works ok. CentOS 6.
What I have tried:
- tty[1-7] with ctrl+alt+Fxxx
- 'reset' command after logging in
- initctl restart tty TTY=/dev/tty2
- killing ttyS
What I didn't try:
- reboot would mean downtime
Is there something that can be done about this?
More info:

correct order to rebuild init after libc6-xen?
Hello to all,
Its been requested that I stifle the /lib/tls warning given even with
xen-friendly libc6 because init was compiled otherwise.
I got the deb sources for sysvinit from Ubuntu, which build just fine.
The last time I tried this I ended up breaking signals to init (even
though /dev/initctl was there and 666) and could not reboot.
So for a new server, I''m going to :
Base server OS (Feisty)
Apt-get in libc6-xen
Apt-get in gcc/python-dev/friends
Compile xen mercurial sources
Compile new sysvinit ''init'' and replace existing copy
make new initrd for dom-0

Serial console
I am trying to get a CentOS 6.3 serial console to work with IPMI SOL. I think I
have everything working but maybe the wrong baud rate on the getty:
$ ipmitool -I lanplus -U root -H 10.0.0.14 sol activate
Password:
[SOL Session operational. Use ~? for help]
??????????
10.0.0.14 is the DRAC IP address of the CentOS 6.3 box. It accepts the password
and connects me to the console but then when I

howto upgrade from samba-4.1.6-ubuntu to 4.1.12
...f your smb.conf uses "include" options, make sure to adapt their paths
as well.
If you want to keep the main config file in /etc/samba, you could omit
the first cp command from above, and instead do
ln -s /etc/samba/smb.conf /usr/local/samba/etc/smb.conf
Finally either
reboot
or
initctl reload-configuration
service smbd start
service nmbd start
hope this helps somebody,

Problems in starting up domU with Xen-ARM (on Cortex-A15 Fast Models)
Hi everyone,
I''m trying to start up domU on xen for ARM (Cortex-A15 Fast models). I
follow the instructions to build xen-tools with this link:
http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/Xen_ARM_with_Virtualization_Extensions/CrossCompiling.
But there seems to be something wrong when I start up domU.
First, I get errors in create domU with xl:

When you attempt to join the domain, it finds it by name immediately and
asks for username/password, after which it gives the error above. I

Re: signal for shutdown in lxc driver
...it is not.
The choice of signal is essentially abitrary, since there is no
common standard used across different init systems. As such we
chose signal numbers that were useful in the context of containers
running applications (ie containers with an init). We then added
logic to be able to use /dev/initctl to trigger shutdown of init
based containers. This works with sysvinit and with systemd,
and various other init systems, but it seems upstart does not
support this. If there is another mechanism for instructing
upstart to shutdown that we can reliably detect, then we could
use that.

Since CentOS 6 uses Upstart as its init system, and GDM is run from an
Upstart service (and not a SysV init script), you can use the upstart
tools to restart GDM. It's actually run from the 'prefdm' service
(because it could also run kdm or xdm).
# initctl restart prefdm
prefdm start/running, process 29141

$ reboot

Which is correct behaviour.
However, a user logged in at the machine as GUI console session has
always been able to halt or reboot the system.

C8 Question
...VM via ssh:
$ loginctl
SESSION UID USER SEAT TTY
1 ##### user
it shows that I don't have a "seat" and so:
$ shutdown -h now
Failed to set wall message, ignoring: Connection timed out
Failed to power off system via logind: Interactive authentication required.
Failed to open initctl fifo: Permission denied
Failed to talk to init daemon.
as expected. Perhaps you can start tracking down with loginctl who has a seat
and why.
