Is it possible to read jpeg files into R?
...mple black-and-white line graph, but the numeric result appears to be much too complex for a simple line graph and I cannot see how to use image or contour to re-create the original jpeg image. Is there an R routine to do this? Thanks, in advance, for your help, Jonathan Williams OPTIMA Radcliffe Infirmary Woodstock Road OXFORD OX2 6HE Tel +1865 (2)24356

making operators act on rows of a data frame
...the program I am trying to write (where the columns I wish to sum are numerous and change from time to time). I would be very grateful to know if it is possible to get operators to act on rows of a data frame, and if so, how. I am running R1.8.1 on Windows NT. Too many e-mails
...ecific question. I did not realise that I would start to receive all e-mails to and from the mailing list. Is there a way of letting me receive only the answers to my own questions? If not, then can you remove me from the mailing list? Thanks, Jonathan Williams Jonathan Williams OPTIMA Radcliffe Infirmary Woodstock Road OXFORD OX2 6HE Tel +1865 (2)24356

R hang-up using lm
...owess(y[x2==0]~x1[x2==0])) I can also avoid the problem by coercing x1 and x2 to be vectors. So, I don't need help to solve the problem. But, it seems an odd problem since it affects one plotting method, but not the other, and it actually causes R to crash. ...and unpredictably, it fails and R just stops. As I say, the operating system continues and any other programs that are multi- tasking are unaffected. If anyone could give me an idea on how to avoid this problem, I'd be grateful. Thanks, Jonathan Williams Jonathan Williams OPTIMA Radcliffe Infirmary Woodstock Road OXFORD OX2 6HE Tel +1865 (2)24356

Samba and Win viruses
Hi, This may seem a fairly obvious question but I need to check it out. It's also fairly urgent so I apologise that I haven't made a good check of the FAQ's or mailing archives. We have a Solaris box with Samba installed. We are on a campus network where boxes that are infected are blocked from the network as a security measure. We have had our server blocked as it is probing port
