R GUI considerations (was: R, Wine, and multi-threadedness)
...inn-R developement and Tinn-R compatibility with
SciViews-R), and Tom Short (Rpad developments and compatibility with
SciViews-R). I think it is important to insist on this, in a world
populated with a myriad of slowly developed, half finished, half
featured R GUIs, made by people that look too individualist in my view
to be able of working all together and to write a single R GUI that has
any chance to be full-featured, well-documented, reasonnably bug-free,
truly platform-independent, in a near future.
Best,
Philippe Grosjean

system-display-config doesn't run right
This might be a gnome problem, but....
I've noticed that, on occasion (frequently), when I try to look at or
modify my display configuration, the Applications->System
Settings->Display doesn't come up. It asks for the root password, which
I give it, and then nothing.
I ran system-config-display form the command line, but it dies thus:

...to be. And that's not petty comments on whomever we hate today.
I'm sure I'm going to piss a lot of people off with this next comment, but
it's what I'm seeing more and more. As an opinionated American who believes
strongly in capitalism (largely because we Americans are too individualistic
for government mandated socialism to work), I am regularly reminded on
how sometimes just an American company can be so demonized.
I used to think maybe I was just paranoid, but after Utah-based Novell
bought Germany-owned SuSE, I started seeing a lot of the anti-Red Hat
comments start to be mad...

Running Turbo C
I must run Turbo C for the university. The install seemed to go
alright, but when I try to run it I get:
$ wine TC.EXE
Warning: unprotecting memory to allow real-mode calls.
NULL pointer accesses will no longer be caught.
err:module:MZ_DoLoadImage insufficient DOS memory
winevdm: can't exec 'C:\tc\BIN\TC.EXE': error=8
What should I do? I've 512 MB RAM- I can't imagine

Help useRs to use R's own Time/Date objects more efficiently
This is mostly a RFC [but *not* about the many extra packages, please..]:
Noticing to my chagrin how my students work in a project,
googling for R code and cut'n'pasting stuff together, accumulating
this and that package on the way all just for simple daily time series
(though with partly missing parts),
using chron, zoo, lubridate, ... all for things that are very
easy in base R *IF*
