Why should the systemd monolithic bloatware be shoved into the kernel, especially when you claim the kernel has "over four million lines of code!" ? Seems like a tactical

[cfe-dev] GitHub anyone?
IMO, if we're switching to git, we should just be clear up front that all committers will be expected to switch to git as well -- or at least, if they want to use something else (e.g. mercurial's git bridge/etc), that it's their own problem. It is truly NOT that big an imposition to require the use of git. And knowing how to use git at at least a basic level is an important skill for

join domain without root
Dear Samba gurus, I am still using Samba 2.2.8a; I have not seen an announcement that this issue would be fixed in 3.0.2; all that follows refers to 2.2.8a. Quoting from Samba-PDC-HOWTO.html (or Samba-HOWTO-Collection.html): Joining the Client to the Domain Windows 2000 ... Windows prompts for an account and password that is privileged to join the domain. A Samba administrative

ad0: READ command timeout....
This morning I found a frozen box. On the console was this: ad0: READ command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting ata0: resetting devices .. ata0-slave: ATA identify retries exceeded done After reboot, those messages were found in /var/log/messages. I'm running FreeBSD 4.8-RC from Apr 4 10:45:49 EST 2003. Any ideas? -- Dan Langille : http://www.langille.org/

Another Fedora decision
I think it well to recall that the change which instigated this tempest was not to the network operations of a RHEL based system but to the 'INSTALLER' process, Anaconda. Now, I might be off base on this but really, ask yourself: Who exactly uses an installer program? And what is the threat model being addressed by requiring that the installer set a suitably strong password for root?

[LLVMdev] Exception Handling Proposal - Second round
...are different families of EH: zero-cost, SjLj etc and they should have similar IR representations F2. Back-ends should know how to implement them or bail out (thus, representation should be *clear*) F3. Optimisations should make sure unwinding and normal flow do not overlap F4. Avoid artificial impositions on basic-block behaviour and dependency to simplify optimisations F5. We *must* keep the unwind actions and the order in which they execute when inlining F6. Some instructions (such as divide in Java) can throw exceptions without an explicit dispatch mechanism There are two quasi-orthogonal pro...

Question about multiple RAIDZ vdevs using slices on the same disk
Hi all :) I''ve been wanting to make the switch from XFS over RAID5 to ZFS/RAIDZ2 for some time now, ever since I read about ZFS the first time. Absolutely amazing beast! I''ve built my own little hobby server at home and have a boatload of disks in different sizes that I''ve been using together to build a RAID5 array on Linux using mdadm in two layers; first layer is

Help with using unpenalised te smooth in negative binomial mgcv gam
Hi, I have been trying to fit an un-penalised gam in mgcv (in order to get more reliable p-values for hypothesis testing), but I am struggling to get the model to fit sucessfully when I add in a te() interaction. The model I am trying to fit is: gam(count~ s(x1, bs = "ts", k = 4, fx = TRUE) + s(x2, bs = "ts", k = 4, fx = TRUE) + te(x2, x3, bs =

Icecast 2.0 in OS X Server?
Thanks Ralph; Maybe it's me. I wiped out my whole /var/libvorbis directory, dropped in a new one from the libvorbis-1.0.1.tar.gz file including all the subdirectories, and edited /var/libvorbis/examples/Makefile.fm as instructed. I then ran ./configure without difficulty, then ran make again, which started afresh but still ended up with the same error: gcc -DDARWIN -fno-common

status of CRAN
Dear List the other day, I had my yearly staff interview with my Head of Department. Under my list of publications, I included a document which I wrote (R-and-octave.txt) that ended up in the "contributed docs" section of CRAN. Unfortunately, neither my HoD nor the personnel person were terribly impressed with it, even though its preparation time was commensurate with many of my (co

Building hdf5 on Windows
Hi all, I try to use the hdf5 package. I downloaded the Windows binary version, and it claims it requires hdf5dll.dll library, so I download the whole hdf5 1.4.3 package from NCSA. Unfortunatelly, it crashes R. I suspect it is because the package was probably compiled against version 1.2 of hdf5 (as evoked in the help file?) or any other previous version, so I downloaded the source of the package
