Thoughts regarding the database compromise....
1] not using secure http for log-ins seems a bit 20th century. 2] to join this mailing list, I needed to send my new credentials over unsecured http - see 1] above. 3] to change password from the compromised reset password, I need to use unsecured http - see 1] above. My point here is that if you are saddened, upset or concerned about the compromise, might the 3 above points also be on the list

TELNENT TO LOCALHOST IN CENTOS 7
...onfauster at googlemail.com> wrote: >> >> best practice is to not use clear text protocols anymore. > > Umm, yeah. Encrypted protocols would never be compromised?. That?s absolutist thinking. There is no such thing as absolute security. There is, however, such a thing as illusory security. in.telnetd is a fine example of this. Study the OpenSSH list of fixed security problems: http://www.openssh.com/security.html I see only three that are attacks against the protocol itself, which is all that?s within the scope of argument here. Everything else is an attack on some...

viewing Postscript file
Is there any R function that can display a Postscript file that is already in the working directory? For example, if 'graph.ps' is such a file, I'd like to type something like this: > plot.postscript.file(file = 'graph.ps') If no such function exists, I'd be interested in a way to use existing R functions to do this under UNIX or Windows, preferably without a system

Mode 0x1b4 errors in logs, unable to save Word documents
Hi all, Our users have started to complain that some of the time they're unable to save Word documents to our Samba drive - Word tells them the disk is full. I had a look at the logs, and there are a lot of weird "Function not implemented" errors. These have been there for a while, but the "Operation not permitted" ones seem new. Nothing on the server has changed.

calling browser in Windows
I'm working on the interface to LiveGraphics3D (Java applet for dynamic 3D graphics) that I mentioned earlier on the list, and I've hit a cross-platform problem. I want to allow the option of popping up a browser or opening the file in a browser automatically. On Unix, the following (stolen from help.start()) works: system(paste(browser, " -remote \"openURL(", url,

MySQL vs SQLite
I have an application where speed is probably the #1 priority here. I am using MySQL 5.0.22. Would SQL be considerably faster than MySQL? I know this has been discussed before, but the search on the forums is not working. Thanks for your help. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

OggPCM2: channel map
...ight end up being ignored unlike the channel map. In theory the channel conversion header suffices for compatibility coding, but in practice I'm not quite sure that the primary target of such codings -- legacy players -- will implement the feature. In that case the compatibility might prove illusory. I'm also not entirely sure that the coding chosen for the channel definitions is the best one. Typically we'd expect each type of channel map to contain all and nothing but the channel definitions typically used with that map type, in some order. For example L, C, R, Ls, Rs and LFE fo...

In that > case the compatibility might prove illusory. It's not that much about "legacy players". It can be useful for any player. Say you have a 5.1 PCM OggPCM stream. If that file has a conversion header, it means that xmms (or any other player) will be able to play it in stereo without doing anything stupid. > I'm also not en...

Highlighting a few bars in a barplot
Hello, I have a bar plot where I am already using colour to distinguish one set of samples from another. I would also like to highlight a few of these bars as ones that should be looked at in detail. I was thinking of using hatching, but I can't work out how or if you can have a background colour and hatching which is different between bars. Any suggestions on how I should do this? Thanks
