lme model specification
I have been asked to analyse the results of (what is to me) a very complicated experiment. The dependent measure is the estimated distance, which is measured as a function of the actual distance. There are also several other IVs. The plot of log estimated distance as a function of log distance is linear. So in the rest of the analysis I will use logestimate and logdistance. My plan is to see

functions for subsets: a minor R programming challenge
...re S-PLUS FUNCTIONS ONLY because they make essential use of frame 0 or frame 1, entities that R quite righly eschews as mad, bad and dangerous to have. So the challenge is out for someone to write versions of them that use R "environments" to achieve the same effect but in an elegant and illumating way. The second function uses frame 1 (or frame 0) for caching partial results that can be later re-used and the third uses frame 0 for storing the current subset. I know it is possible since Doug Bates has done so already, but I have lost his code. Of course a part of the challenge is working o...

ScrUITools for Mac OS X
RubyRunner has been replaced by the more capable ScrUITools. "ScrUI" stands for Script User Interface, and is pronounced "screwy". :) Currently, there are two tools: ScrUIRunner and ScrUIActivator. ScrUIRunner replaces RubyRunner, but it allows you to specify the working directory, command line arguments, and shell environment variables for the script (...added specifically

Reading data from a text file conditionally skipping lines
Hi, It would be better to give an example. If your dataset is like the one attached: con<-file("Trial1.txt") ?Lines1<- readLines(con) ?close(con) #If the data you wanted to extract is numeric and the header and footer are characters, dat1<-read.table(text=Lines1[-grep("[A-Za-z]",Lines1)],sep="\t",header=FALSE) dat1 #?? V1 V2 V3 V4 V5 #1? 38 43 39 44 45 #2? 39

Spacewalk? Local repo? Cache?
I have a mix of CentOS 5, 6, and now 7 servers at work. There are enough of them now that it is starting to make sense for them to get updates from an internal source. I've seen RHN Satellite in years past. It looks like it may be a way to allow Windows admins here (familiar with WSUS) to update Linux boxes. A local repo might be easier to set up, but (as with Spacewalk) it seems like

android cifsmanager requires group read permissions on samba server
I have a server setup with samba, and other linux clients can connect to the shares with no problems. I also have an android phone (w/ cyanogenmod) that uses the app cifsmanager from the android market to mount the server shares on it as a client. The problem is that after a share is mounted, the client cannot see any files or folders unless the server's share is group readable. Both other
