httx, iiimf, and Japanese input still not working
...and be free of Windows. But it's still not working. To cut to the chase, in my quest to get Japanese working, I came across the following: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-i18n-list/2004-November/msg00030.html ... where someone says: "You need to have httx (htt_xbe) running to use iiimf in KDE." Okay, so I go looking on the net for httx, but can't quite figure out what it is or how to download it. So my question is what is it, where do I get it, and will it help me get Japanese input? Now, for anyone who needs a reference, what follows is how I came to find out abou...

Japanese Language Support?
When I installed CentOS, I was careful to install Japanese language support. However, now that CentOS is running, I can't seem to get Japanese language input going. I clicked on the top menu bar to add the "Input Method Switcher", and now there is a little white square on the top panel. If I click on it, gives me the option of using ASCII input, or to "Add or Remove".

Die, KDE! Die! (Sticking with Gnome and Yum Conflicts)
Okay, I experimented with both KDE and Gnome, and decided I'd rather use Gnome. After making this decision, I wanted to remove KDE, because I like to keep my hard drive as lean as possible. I accomplished this, or so I thought, by running: # yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)". It seemed to work. Removed a whole bunch 'o stuff. Okay, but then I wanted to install k3B,

upgrade to 4.4 hangs
Two identical machines, both running CentOS 4.3 plus all the errata. First one: yum update went for a while and hung. At the bottom of the yum.log file was this: Aug 31 06:58:01 Updated: control-center.i386 1:2.8.0-12.rhel4.5 Aug 31 06:58:09 Updated: iiimf-le-unit.i386 1:12.1-13.EL.5 Aug The python process was in the process list, but it was consuming no CPU time. I let it go for a couple of hours, then killed it and played with the duplicate removal script posted previously. Second one: I tried a combination of suggestions previously posted: yu...

How can I make these command prompt settings into universal settings?
I've got it so that I can enable Japanese input into an application by typing the following at a command prompt (with FireFox, for example): [dave at localhost ~]$ kinput2 -canna & [1] 10631 [dave at localhost ~]$ XMODIFIERS='@im=kinput2' LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.utf8 firefox However, I would rather not have to type in all that craziness each time I want to start an application. Further,

[fdo] Standardization of input methods on Linux?
...nput methods within a program once it's been started. GTK+ 2 and Qt 4 both appear to provide their own seemingly incompatible standards, whereby an input method can be made to work only in GTK+ 2 or Qt 4 with minimal configuration. Finally, there are third-party solutions like SCIM, UIM and IIIMF, which aim to unify the pre-existing interfaces into one, handing input methods via software that in turn uses one of the pre-existing solutions to communicate with programs. These unfortunately don't always work satisfactorily and can be hard to set up for some users. Some input methods a...
