Migrating: tdb to ldap (Samba Classic)
...ldifs.
What is the next step? The options I have read is pdbedit -i tdbsam to -e
ldapsam. But if TDB is wiped how will it populate? The other option is
that export the /passwd and /group and convert them to ldif using the
"migration tools" .i.e /smbldap-migrate . I think it is called the Idealix
tools.
Please help.
Thank you,

Samba as a domain controller for Linux workstations?
I was wondering, if it's possible to set up Samba as a sort of a domain
controller for Linux workstations?
I'm thinking of benefits like roaming profiles, managing printers etc.
Or perhaps for Linux there are better choices than Samba, when it comes
to the office / school use (many users, many classrooms, many
workstations etc.)?

If you're running samba-2.2.x compiled with LDAP support, you probably
want to read this article:

shadowLastChange not updated
....
The 'passwd' command correctly updates the shadowLastChange-field, but
enabling the 'unix password sync = yes' leads to the same problems
reported by mikec a month and a half ago.
We're running CentOS 4.3 with the latest updates as well as
smbldap-tools from february 2005 by Idealix. Looking through the source
of the latest versions of these two, I can't find any mention of the
shadowLastChange field, which leads me to think that this still is not
touched in any way by either software in their latest version (3.0.23
and 0.9.2).
Googling I only found some references to lda...

With sambaSamAccount, do I need an add user script and an add machine script?
Dear Folks,
With Samba 3.0.0 RC1, openldap-2.1.22, with samba as PDC and as much as possible
in LDAP, do I need to write an add user script and an add machine script? Or
does samba handle this itself? Sorry, I'm rather confused about how to go about
setting this all up.

password question
Hi,
I have installed Samba 2.2.8 on a Solaris 8 server and have a question about samba passwords. I know you can assign an NT server to authenticate passwords, and you can also use samba to create a smbpasswd list. My question, is can you use the existing UNIX /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow file so that we don't have to manage another list?
Thanks in advance!

ldapsmb
Hello List,
i try to build up a samba/ldap pdc using samba 3.0.1 and ldapsmb-1.0. It seems
that ldapsmb-1.0 did not work with samba 3.0 in non compat mode. Searching for a
newer version was frustrating. The only thing i found were dead links to
ldapsmb-1.2.
If i look inside all this samba mailing lists, it seems that erverybody is using
ldapsmb with samba 3.0. Something is going wrong and i

Problems with smbldap-tools 0.8.2 and Samba 3
I'm having problems using smbldap-tools 0.8.2 from idealix,
I'm using the following entry in my smb.conf file:
add machine script = smbldap-useradd.pl -w -g 553 %u
Then, while I try to add a workstation to my domain, the script
adds a posixAccount, and then I get this error:

XP not joining domain
...ore it i.e. closing the connection.
I have tried both with and without the signorseal registry change. The
most recent info seems to indicate that it is not needed, but I was not
sure. The machine account gets created automatically. I have tried to
create it manually (using smbldap-useradd -w from IDEALIX's smbldap
tools), but with the same result. The global section of the smb.conf file
are included below.
I have searched the archives and google but found nothing except one other
having the same problem, but no solution was found.
Does anyone have any ideas?

[SOLVED] profile question

i solved my problem.
i wanted a manager to be able to modify files in the users' profiles

Joining XP clients to a Samba PDC
...one out there can help
me.
I'm trying to set up a samba PDC on a Fedora Core 2 box using an LDAP
backend (on another server). The base install of everything is working
fine. At the unix level LDAP connectivity is configured and working
properly for users and groups. I've also installed idealix's
smbldap-tools and used their script to configure the ldap directory for
SAMBA. As far as I can tell that's all configured and working properly
too. I can add users and groups with smbldap-useradd and groupadd tools
and they show up in the proper places when I browse the LDAP directory...

Samba-3.0.2 PDC LDAP: Add computer to domain issue with smbldap-tools
Hi guys,
I've installed openldap-2.1.25 and Samba-3.0.2 and configured everything
with no TLS on a Slackware-9.1 Linux box.
To manage the LDAP backed I've used smbldap-tools-0.8.4.
After populating the database with smbldap-populate I was able to first
add users to /etc/passwd etc. and then to LDAP with smbldap-useradd -a
and access the server via Windows PCs. Everything appeared to be

Yet Another LDAP Question
Hi All,
I know this must have been discussed around here a million times, but I really
didn't find this info anywhere else and I'm on a deadline here.
I already have an FC1 server with a working LDAP directory in production. The
same server runs a Samba PDC, but not with LDAP functionality yet.
All I need to know right now is if I have to include some standard user and

Samba and LDAP backend - howto docs problems?
Hi all,
I have followed the instructions at
http://samba.mirror.ac.uk/samba/docs/man/passdb.html in an attempt to
set up a Samba v3.0.2 (supplied by Redhat as part of RHEL v3.0) PDC.
I have got as far as trying to get a windows 2k box to join this new
domain that I have created, however this fails with the error "Logon
failure: unknown user name or password".
Samba itself logs
