Project Proposal in GSoC 2019
Hi All,
I am interested in applying for the two projects listed in the Xapian Gsoc
2019 project idealist: "Learning to Rank Stabilisation" and "Weighting
Schemes". I have downloaded the codebase and going through some of the
commits related to Letor API, BM25, and DFR weighting schemes. Can anyone
tell me how to write about the formal proposal for the above-mentioned
projects?

Apache/PHP Installation - opinions
...Apache in RHEL / CentOS 7. You just can't.
The PHP in stock RHEL / CentOS is so old that web application developers
largely are not even using it anymore, resulting in some web
applications that just simply don't work unless you update the PHP to
something more modern.
It's a nice idealistic philosophy to want to keep the same versions and
backport security fixes and keep everything API compatible but in real
world practice, it makes your server stale.

You already showed yourself unworthy of getting help from people here. In
fact, you are soooo smart that I don't even understand why you came here
in the first place...
Why don't you just go and consult yourself about your problems?

How to configure printers (newbie question)
Hi
Just started playing with wine to run an old Window's 16 bit app
(Idealist). The app runs fine, give or take a font issue, but having
read the FAQ and docs, I cannot find any info on configuring printers so
when I go File->Print it needs to present the printer I want to print
to. I noticed some LPT commands and have a default Linux printer
(HPLJ2100) setup. So any info on how I can get

Purging /var/mail/username ?
Dovecot is delivering mail to my ~/.mail directory wonderfully. But
/var/mail/michael is growing steadily.
Is it the job of Dovecot to purge this file regularly? Is there a setting
somewhere for this?
Thanks,
Michael

Creating users "on - the - fly"
.... Just ask the server
for the keys and do a one-off authentication. But I've seen even LDAP
creates the user directories.
I see that 2.6 kernels can have some 4B users, which should last me a
while. But it is a bit more work and plumbing to try to keep things
in sync.
I'm a bit / very idealistic though - so I guess I'll keep rooting
around. I'm ok writing a PAM module if that's what I needed. But I
have a feeling there's a good bit more to it. And without someone know
"knows " - that can be a very long rabbit trail :)

...s if you're interested.
I'm not sure what the current maintenance model is for the older JIT engine. Near as I can tell when it grows at all it is driven by people who have a need making specific contributions and as such it doesn't have a particularly coherent direction.
I have more idealistic hopes for the MCJIT engine, and if you're interested in using it I'd be happy to talk to you about future design directions.

[LLVMdev] Memory clean for applications using LLVM for JIT compilation
Thanks for the reply, nice to have some validation. I thought of
another approach which might be preferable:
generate relocatable code, use a JITEventListener to grab each
function and copy it to my own memory,
let all the LLVM stuff die normally then use my copy of the code.
However when I call setRelocationModel(Reloc::PIC_) on the engine
builder I get code that seg faults.
The assembly looks

nearly *any* developer to utilize. I believe that if the bar is low,
ubiquity is assured.
I understand that the focus of the development team is on the core and I may
be idealistic in this, however, I would suggest at a minimum to release a
request for help to develop Xiph endorsed/sponsored tools and libraries to
fulfill this purpose. I think that having that endorsement is critical.
Sure, third parties can develop said tools, but they won't ever be in sync

username and password not from /etc/passwd
Can dovecot use usernames and passwords not from /etc/passwd and be able to
read mails of an user whose username and password are in /etc/passwd ?
For example:
- Joe Bloke has a local Unix account joe on Unix server mail.example.com
- Sendmail on mail.example.com accepts mails for joe at example.com and put
them in /var/mail/joe
- can dovecot use other username/password file or database or

Hello,
I'm running the dovecot backports from jones.dk. Everything is working
fine so far, but whenever someone is logging in (IMAP or POP 3) I get
the following error message in my mail.log:
[...] pop3(frederik): utime() failed with index file
/var/mboxes/frederik/.INBOX/.imap.index: Operation not permitted

Writing a desktop application
Over the Summer months I have written the prototype for text-retrieval database. Currently it lacks a database 'engine' for storing, word-searching, and indexing. Xapian is on the face of it suitable for this purpose. The prototype was developed on Kubuntu, but will run on Windows if Python 2.5/2.6, Qt 4.4/4.5 and PyQt4 are installed. The code (GPL) is here for the present (I will email it

Bug#287184: logcheck overwriting ownership/permissions of /etc/logcheck/* on upgrades
Package: logcheck
Version: 1.2.32
Severity: important
In postinst logcheck "fixes" permissions of /etc/logcheck/* to 750.
In my (and others on #d-d) opinion ownership and permissions should be
preserved upon package upgrades. Logcheck must not screw with my
decision to make them world readable every time it configures.
