investing in ideas and decision support system experimentation
we're looking for help to analyze some theoretical data-sets, essentially
outlining the progress of a given number of ideas over time, by using R in
conjunction with mysql databases.
let's say there is a game, and the point of the game is to find the most
worthwhile solution. let's extend that and say that this solution (or number
of solutions) need to be validated by a community. and that community can,
and h...

IDEA support
hello!
one thing i'd like to see in OpenSSH is (optional) IDEA algorith support.
this would be useful especially in an environment which has a mix of old
ssh v1.2.x and OpenSSH installations. according to Ascom non commercial
use of IDEA is free (http://www.ascom.com/infosec/idea.html). also, there
are countries (e.g. Finland) where IDEA is not patented. here&...

thoughts
To whom it may concern:
I am a computer engineering student at Marquette University. I have a lot
of ideas for Operating systems and applications, but due to my limited
knowledge, they are lying dorment in my head. If there is someone that I
can bounce some ideas off so that they can actually accomplish it, this
would be great.
This may sound weird, someone with good ideas but limited know-how. T...

...and students can
apply between March 16th and 27th, but the keen ones have already
started to talk to orgs (as you've probably noticed).
The full timeline is here:

The main priorities right now are:
* Refreshing the list of project ideas. I've already done a fair bit
of cleaning up, and I'm in the process of adding some ideas we
brainstormed at the mentor summit, but the better the breadth and
depth of ideas we have, the more likely we are to be selected:

Hi all,
It seems quite a few veteran orgs have 0, or very few, projects listed
on their Ideas List for their GSoC Org apps. Some hav...

Which features would you like to see on the crantastic.org community portal?
Hi,
As some of you know, one of the R Projects ideas for GSOC 2009 is to
expand the crantastic.org portal. Some ideas for what should be done
is mentioned in Hadley Wickham's project description [1], others have
been briefly mentioned on this mailing list before. Undoubtedly,
however, there are many other good ideas out there that could be
imple...

res_motv: Request for Comment
I've been considering the nature of Asterisk, its security, the bug
tracker, and more... And i've come up with an interesting idea: A
"message of the version". The idea is that Asterisk has a compile time
32-bit unsigned int version which is incremented whenever some major new
bug is fixed. When Asterisk starts up (and periodically, maybe once per
day), it sends a packet with the version number to a server at Digiu...

I'm happy to submit the org application again.
The main priorities right now are:
* Refreshing the list of project ideas - this list is one of the key
things they look at when reviewing org applications:

I've done a bit of cleaning up, but mostly just updating it to
reflect things that have been implemented now (both in GSoC and

Idea: Backend for Lucene format indexes
Hi,
I'm interested to implement the idea of using search indexes build by
Lucene. I have some idea of how to do that. I'm currently studying the index
format of both. I have written an application of search using Lucene and now
I'll do the same using Xapian. then I'll check the details of those index
format and then find how t...

...st year, and while we didn't get a place, the feedback was
positive and we were encouraged to apply again this year.
I'm happy to act as admin (which I've done for SWIG in the past, so I
know what's involved) and submit the application.
We're putting together a list of project ideas for students on the wiki:
http://trac.xapian.org/wiki/GSoCProjectIdeas
If you're interested in acting as a mentor for one of the ideas there,
or have an idea for a project with a scope suitable for a student to
complete in about 12 weeks, please update that page. Ideas without a

Feature Request: Invalid sshd port fallback
...t adding a fallback in the event that somehow the
sshd_config port number is invalid.
Example:
Port != (1<= or >=65535)
By default fall by to port 22, and spit out an error. Same would go for if
the new port is already in use, fall back to port 22 and spit out an error.
Why is this a good idea? Would be a good idea because people are human and
make mistakes, and you shouldn't have to wipe your server just because an
invalid port was used by accident.
Why is this a bad idea? I see no reason why this would be a bad idea that I
am aware of.

Project proposal/idea: Categorize traffic by behavior
Back in 2003/2004 when finding the topic for my masters thesis, I had a
secondary project idea, perhaps its about time to do something about the
idea, and hear if anyone else thinks its a good idea?
The basic idea is to: "Categorize traffic by behavior"
The categorization should be based upon things like packet timing
characteristics and packet size, rather than standard port...

Hi,
I am C Karthik Iyer, a 3rd year B Tech student at NITK Surathkal. I am
interested in working on projects on Information Retrieval and Machine
Learning. I've had previous experience on working on projects regarding
Question Answering Systems.
I have a project idea which includes both IR and ML but i dont know how
feasible the idea is. Could you guys say when will you be available on IRC
so that I can discuss the idea with you.
Regards

Notes from dbg.value coffee chat
I chatted with Jeremy Morse, Orlando, and Stephen Tozer at the dev meeting,
and wanted to summarize the conversation for our benefit, and to share it
with others. I aim to be brief, so I apologize if these notes aren't as
helpful as they could be to folks who weren't present.
Three project ideas, by priority:
1. Address https://llvm.org/pr34136, improving quality of variable location
info for variables in memory, by getting the frontend to pre-annotate
assignments.
2. Prototype "stop points", or statement markers in the instruction stream.
Use Dexter or other tools to measure po...

I'd particularly encourage previous GSoC students to consider

Interested orgs can apply already up until February 6th (just over a
week away as I write).
We've taken part many times before, and it's resulted in both new
contributors and interesting new features - I think it's well worth
applying again.
We need some idea of how many potential mentors we have - it's a
question that's asked on the application, and we also need to make sure
that we aren't listing project ideas which nobody is actually wanting to
mentor this year.
So if you're interested in mentoring, please talk to James Aylett or me....

[SoC09-Info] Idea submission.
...itz mentioned in his introducing "Google Summer of Code 2009"
email, I will manage the organizational part of the R-Project
application and (hopfully) participation.
Google's timeline schedules March 9-13 as date for organizations to
make an application as mentoring organization. The idea is now to
collect as many project ideas in a brainstorming phase and submit
these by March 10.
A project proposal consists of:
(1) a short description,
(2) a detailed description,
(3) required skills and
(4) the mentors name.
I propose, that for each idea, a
