C6, lightweight window managers - opinions?
So, on my old Netbook, now happily running C6.9, I'm looking for opinions
for a lightweight window manager. Gnome surely ain't it....
Years back, I used to like IceWM, but not sure it's been kept up.
So, opinions?

Low-memory Centos5?
...ly small with a 12" screen). The
bad part is that it is maxed out on memory with 384MB.
Has anyone played with using Centos5 on systems with
little memory? Ideally, I don't need too much - Firefox,
Openoffice, a little Perl/Python/C here and there. I was
thinking about using either XFCE or Icewm as the window
manager. I'd also like it to work with the existing wireless
card (Dlink DWL-G650). Any thoughts or recommendations?
TIA!

CentOS4 Loop at shutdown
...twice in the past month, but unfortunately I failed
to write down the looping messages. The only relevant problems I found
via Google reference raid controllers, and I have POI (plain ol' IDE).
Doh! Obviously I wuill need to record the errors.
My environment is run-level 5 with GDM, but I use IceWm instead of one
of the more common choices. IceWm shuts down cleanly. The loop occurs
after selecting Shutdown from the GDM login panel. Errata are current
as of last night.

WHAT?!?!?!
I *loathe* gnome, and it just keeps getting more bloated and worse.
When I'm ready to install 8, I'll have to see if icewm is updated for it.

5.8, t-bird 10 and firefox 10
Here's a problem I have at home - I updated to 5.8, have t-bird 10 and ff
10; I run icewm. However, I cannot get a link in an email to open in my
browser. Anyone else see this?

Wine hates everything but KDE!
OS: freshly updated linux mandrake 7.2 with my 2.4.2 kernel and ALSA
.9 beta2
X: 4.0.2 with up to date helix GNOME for mandrake 7 and KDE (came w/
mandrake)
Wine: 20010305 from source tarball
Program: Starcraft 1.0 full
Symptoms: Under Gnome (sawfish, icewm, twm, windowmaker all the
same), takes over screen or makes a window (my choice) displays the
"blizzard" splash screen (no sound) and quits with bitching about not
having a debugger set up
Under raw X with TWM takes over the screen (no choice) and displays a
black screen and ignores the...

Is this slowness normal?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I have installed wine 20010629 from codeweavers (this seems to be the
latest version available from there).
Running on a 700MHz Linux box, with gnome as the desktop manager and icewm
as the window manager.
If I run the (in)famous SOL.EXE, it takes 53 seconds before the program
appears on the desktop. All the other programs I've tried seem to take at
least this long (and sometimes several minutes) before they appear.
Is this normal, or might there be somewthing screwy w...

missing X11 graphics title bar
...only occured when I was using graphics with fairly intensive
computations going on at the same time.
Recently, I've encountered this problem with a Linux system (Ubuntu)
using Gnome 2.8 with its default window manager Metacity. On the
advice from the thread below, I changed window manager (to icewm) and
that eliminated the problem, except that the default Metacity seems
otherwise to work more efficiently and faster with Gnome.
I should note that I have been using Debian 3.0 (with gnome/icewm) for
almost three years with never any problem like this.
Thanks in advance for any information anyo...

Proper setup for major package removals?
...quot; options, which pulled in more than I really need.
I don't want or need a heavy desktop environment chewing up part of the
4 gigs allocated to the VM, but I will occasionally need a GUI. What
I'd like to do is remove GDM, Gnome DE, Java, Ruby, and a bunch of other
stuff. Then install ICEWM. I want to remove GDM, but keep X, so that
the machine comes up at the text command line. If/when I need a GUI,
I'll type "startx", after setting up ~/.xinitrc.
So far, I've made one change to yum.conf, by adding
remove_leaf_only=1
I think that my next 2 steps should be to...

I used to like IceWM... but I'm at work and people run either kde or
gnome, so I've got to support them.

Centos 5 File Server X-Windows problem
...ddenly blanked
its display. I can switch to <ctrl><alt><f1>, but switching back to
<ctrl><alt><f7> just gives me a blank screen (no cursor). There are no
entries in /var/log/messages or in /var/log/Xorg.0.log that might
explain what happened. I was running IceWM, but I can't find any logs
for it at all. ~/.xsession-errors shows nothing useful, either. ( And
was last updated 10 days ago. )
Anyone have an idea what happened? ( Or how to figure out what happened? )

shutdown and console messges
...ion.
1. When I shutdown from the GDM menu, most of the time the screen goes
black and none of the "stopping..." messages are visible until just
about the time the mounted filesystems are shutdown, about three lines
before acpi poweroff.
2. Always when I shutdown from my desktop manager (IceWm in my case),
I get all the messages immediately. Once in a blue moon, this works in
case 1 as well.
No big deal. I'm just wondering if anyone can explain this behavior.

XCP graphical display on VM
...y XCP) to virtualize
two servers: one running OpenBSD, the other running FreeBSD.
These both servers will be running more or less headless (at least
without any graphical environment). I would want
to add a third server (most probably a Debian Squeeze or Freebsd)
to have a desktop (light, probably IceWM or XFCE).
The physical machine will have VTx but not VTd.
Is a such solution possible with Xen ? I don''t understand
exactly if it is possible to have one DOMu with the control of
a VGA display (1600x1050 by 16 or 24 colors) or if the control
of VGA display is reserved to the DOM0.
I hav...

Simple Sudoku - not minimising/letting me do anything else
...lled Simple Sudoku (http://www.angusj.com/sudoku/index.php)
but I cannot minimise it, nor go to another screen to do something else.
If I try, its window gets larger, vertically.
I am using wine 20050725 (which is what is packaged for my system at
present), on a Debian system running XFree86, with icewm-gnome.
Can anyone advise why this program "hogs attention"?

R's X11 Device Properties
Hello,
This is an issue that is at the interface of R, X, and my window manager
(either icewm or openbox, both latest versions). I am running R 2.10.1 on
Ubuntu 9.10.
My goal: When an X11 device is started in R (e.g., by simply calling
plot), I would like for the resulting window to be in the "always on top"
state, and for focus not to switch to it.
Configuring this behavior...
