Need amendment - I_need_the_Kernel_Source
The I_need_the_Kernel_Source wiki article should have instructions to
do the procedure as non-root. Installing the source as root may not
be as dangerous as compiling something, but nevertheless it is not
recommended and is not consistent with the contents of other related
articles.

looking for kernel sources
Hi all
I'm looking for the linux source files for CentOS 5.1 2.6.18-53.el5. To
install VirtualBox, I apparently need the kernel sources, and even after
installing kernel-devel & kernel-headers via yum I still get an error
saying I need the kernel-sources

Create page about rebuilding SRPMS and preparing RPM environment
Hello,
As discussed on the centos-users list, I would like to create some
pages on the CentOS Wiki with instructions on how to set up your
environment to build RPMs and how to rebuild RPMs. This content today
exists here:
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source#head-a8dae925eec15786df9f6f8c918eff16bf67be0d
I would suggest creating these two:
1) http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/RebuildSRPM
-> what SRPMs are, how to download them, how to install them, how to
rebuild them
-> link to the other page on how to set up your rpm-build environment
2) http://w...

C7 Kernel module compilation
Hey there,
I'm trying to compile a single module following this guide:
https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules#head-d2e4c05886f94c701e4ae74387d41d8c40c25d01
and
https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source
I tried to compile a module for novuton led controller supplied by
thirdparty and I got several error.
To check if this is the wrong procedure I tried to compile cifs module
as listed in howto but when loading with modprobe I get "Exec format
error", and from dmesg "cifs: no sym...

CentOS6: Building a modified kernel rpm
Dear Akemi,
I'm really ashamed, in "https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source"
I've missed the last 5 lines following the CentOS5 section. All is now clear for
me on the process to follow to build a new kernel from source rpm and the
CONFIG_NUMA_EMU option is active.
I've set it with make menuconfig to avoid some additional mistakes in the config
file.
Howe...

CentOS6: Building a modified kernel rpm

Thanks for answering Akemi . Indeed I tried using this howto before posting but
something is wrong in this tutorial.
I installed the prerequisites and downloaded the kernel sources as detailed in
section 2 of https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source.
But on https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel, section 2, all goes wrong!
My ~/rpmbuild/BUILD directory is empty!
No configs directory too.
No ~/rpmbuild/BUILD/kernel-*/linux-*/ available, all configs files are in
~/rpmbuild/SOURCES
Since this I try to modify ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES/config-x86...

Perhaps you are thinking of the examples found on a page like this one:
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source
Depending on whether a command is supposed to be run by root or by a
non-root user, the command line prompt changes between:
[root at host]#
and
[user at host]$

How to patch a CentOS6 kernel

I've been banging my head on this off and on for quite a while, now.
I've mucked with Gentoo and Debian packaging, but kernel RPMs are a new
one for me...

Automating the preparation of kernel sources
I have a driver that requires installing the kernel sources (into my own
rpmbuild tree, not the system) prior to compiling. I followed the info for
centos6 here:
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source#head-a8dae925eec15786df9f6f8c918eff16bf67be0d
I can successfully compile and install the module from tarball after
manually prepping the kernel sources, but I need to turn this into a proper
RPM and am wondering if there are macros I'm not seeing for how to prep the
kernel sources as part of a...

Kernel source - linux -2.6.18 i386 or i686
...ILD/kernel-2.6.18:
linux-2.16.18.i386 and linux-2.16.18.i686
So which one am I suppose to be patching?
Currently, the patch starts out with:
diff -urN a/net/ipv4/xfrm4_input.c b/net/ipv4/xfrm4_input.c
I followed the kernel source setup instructions on the wiki:
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source
tells me to supply i686 for getting and setting up the source.
But http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel
has me setting up a .config file with '# i386' as the first line. Now
that is a comment, right? So why add such a comment. Perhaps it is NOT
a comment? Shesh...
Anyway, wh...

Centos 7 newer kernel needed
Dear Laurentiu,
Agree with Johnny for kernel upgrade if upgrade helps, alternative if 3.10
or above already supported it, you can check from kernel parameter or
options if they are disabled on purpose.
You can do that via the "make menuconfig" via
"https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source" or
"https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules". Hope that helps!

Also, if you are just looking for the 32bit kernel, The Source code is here:
https://git.centos.org/summary/rpms!kernel
You would:
1. git clone https://git.centos.org/git/rpms/kernel

Upstream removed support for standalone i686 installs, but we've been
building/maintaining it as an alternate architecture similar to arm. You
can find the media here -> http://mirror.centos....
