network redundancy via two nics, two routers?
...uplink to upstream provider, and is in
VLAN-1
- Switch 1, Port 25+26 are trunked (link aggregation; depends on your
terminology; these are procurve 2600's) and connected to Switch 2,
Port 25+26. All vlans configured run on the trunked link, with tagging.
- Uplinks to provider are running HSRP. Upstream provider creates a
virtual IP (say, 2.2.2.1) that is the gateway to the outside world on
one of the links, randomly.
- Server A is connected to Switch 1, Port 2 on eth0; and Switch 2,
Port 2 on eth1. Server is assigned an IP address, say, 1.1.1.2,
inside VLAN-2 (1.1.1.0/24)

OT: CentOS server with 2 GbE links to 2 GbE switches
Hi all,
I am trying to come up with an architecture that has some redundancy.
The idea is to hook up the two GbE LAN interfaces of a CentOS server to
two Gigabit Ethernet switches. In case one switch goes down, there is a
redundant path (the server is redundant too). Here is the idea:

equal-cost multipath in 2.6.7
I have question about multipath routing. I am running a 2.6.7 kernel (gentoo).
I have a route with three nexthops on the same interface. I see a
different nexthop being picked for different destination addresses.
All is fine.
Now if one of the nexthop goes down (arp entry times out and arp
request doesnt get a response), does it remove the nexthop from
contention and only use the remaining two

Using a Dual WAN Load Balancing Device
We have a client that wants to bond 2 DSL circuits instead of getting
a T-1 (or similar) at their office to run their VoIP traffic on. We
came across this Multihomed Gateway (MH200):
http://www.cyberpathinc.com/mh200/details.htm
Does anybody think this would work if installed at the client location
handling NAT for 10 Cisco 7960's and connecting to our public asterisk
server?

getent not working after installing firewall
Solution is really simple.
Since this server is dual-homed ( 2 nic's ), i suggest setup advanced routing tables.
The short version of howto setup.
edit /etc/iproute2/rt_tables and Add :
10 OfficeLan
20 InternetWan
Lookup the routing tables:
ip route show table OfficeLan
ip route show table InternetWan
The default gateway's is to the internet. ( change ethX to you network interface

Making FORWARD_IPV4=YES permanent / DHCP multiple routers
First,
I'd like to configure my system to forward ip, to act as a gateway for
my network. I've always used a script during startup to do this:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ${UPLINK} -j SNAT --to ${IP_NAT}
This works fine, however I want this permanent so I don't have to run
the script on startup. I have the firewall setup with SNAT

samba resolves wrong wins ip address
Hello all,
This has been making me crazy for a while, but it seems like a really
easy fix. I just can't figure out what it is. Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated.
I have two Linux machines existing on a mostly MS network and have samba
running well on each. However, one machine resolves the wrong ip
address of the other machine. Here's the setup.
Machine 1: Laptop

Network routes
I am unable to ping NE.TW.RKB.IP1 from an outside network. Other machines
which do not have access or routes for NET.WOR.KA.0 respond just fine.
How do I get it to respond on both NET.WOR.KA.0 and NE.TW.RKB.0 given all
default traffic should go through NET.WOR.KA.1 unless it is in reply to
traffic from NE.TW.RKB.1 or there is an outage.

gateway failover with linux
Hi.
I''m wondering if there''s a good way to configure a Linux firewall box to
failover to a single backup server, while preserving connection state.
This question has been asked before, but the latest reference I can find
is from 2004, at which time Linux had no equivalent of OpenBSD''s pfsync,
though Harald was said to be working on one.
Did anything come of those

[OT] Corporate Firewall
Hey,
The company I work for is in the market for a new firewall. Right now
we're hosting all of our own stuff (on CentOS servers) behind an old
checkpoint firewall.
I think Checkpoint is overkill for our needs and very expensive, plus I
don't like the "per-user" charges of some commercial solutions. What do
you guys suggest that we upgrade to? Here are some of the

Dead Gateway Detection & BGP
Greetings to all,
To start I’ll firstly lay down the foundation to what I have done so far and
if those of you on the list can provide further insight, tips, links etc.
This scenario consists of 2 firewalls (both running Debian “etch”), 2 Cisco
routers (unsure of model numbers) connected together like so in the diagram
below.
