w2k and samba, printer properties hourglasses forver after driver upload + OK
...this point I just selected the manufacturer's OEMSETUP.INF again. Windows notified me that the .inf file does not contain a Microsoft digital signiature. I clicked Yes, Continue. Files upload to print share... I see them on the server in path/to/W32X86/2 I click OK (or Apply), and get the hourglass, and the properties window for the printer becomes unresponsive. If I later end that task and try to print a test page, windows reports a failure. Does anyone here see anything wrong in what I did? What level logs should I post? I have successfully uploaded drivers and been able to print u...

R won't start
Hi, I have a problem with R; it won't start! I've installed it fine, no problems, but when I try to run it the mouse cursor changes to an hourglass for 1 second and back to normal, and that's it, it doesn't start up. No error messages or nothing. I run Windows XP Pro. by the way. I'd be thankful for any help. [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Garmin Trip & Waypoint Manager installer won't run
Hi, I'm trying to install version 4.0 from the CD that came with my GPS unit. I'm able to run Setup.exe and get to the initial startup menu. The links to visit the Garmin website and exit the installation work fine but when I click the one to install the app I get the hourglass cursor for a fraction of a second, like it's starting to do something, but nothing happens. This is my first attempt at using wine so I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using PCLinux OS 2007 with wine 0.9.58 installed from the repositories...

R 1.9.1 Fails to Start on WinXP SP2
I have two computers both of which are running Windows XP SP2. R 1.9.1 runs just fine on one but not the other. Both installations of R came from the same installation package. When I click on the desktop icon an hourglass shows up then disappears. Similarly, if I start RGUI the process shows up in task-manager then abruptly disappears. Interestingly, I can access R in Excel via the D(COM) Server on both computers. Any ideas? Thanks, Scott

Thunderbird not able to edit sieve Message Filters
...pplied to incoming mail, and working perfectly well. However, when I attempt to edit the Sieve Filters (from Thunderbird Tools->Sieve Message Filters...), the Sieve Filters tab is displayed, but not populated (eg, the Server Sieve Capabilities are not displayed, and there is an endless 'hourglass' displayed in the main mailfilters pane. Does anyone recognise the symptoms and can advise how to resolve the problem, or suggest what logs I should examine/post in order to identify the cause? -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Bell...

contour lines intersect
...contour() sometimes draws contour lines that intersect. Is there a temporary fix? A dataset which causes problems is at http://www.maths.uwa.edu.au/~adrian/dumpdata.R If you try just source("dumpdata.R") image(huh) contour(huh) the 100 x 100 matrix 'huh' contains an hourglass-shaped region of values around 0.8. The contour plot shows two contour lines at the level 0.8 which cross each other in a figure 8. In the short term can anyone suggest how to fix the contour plot for this particular dataset?? gdm won't start
I'm trying to set up a new CentOS 4.2 desktop, and gdm refuses to start. It blanks the screen, displays the swirling blue circle mouse cursor that appears to be an hourglass equivalent, then drops back to the console window. It repeats this several times then displays the following error: The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds, it is likely that something bad is going on. I will wait for 2 minutes before trying again on display :0...

demo(graphics) problem under rw1041 (PR#1307)
..."demo(graphics)", after pressing return to start, a graphics window appears. When I get to the second prompt: > opar <- c(opar, par(bg = "white")) > plot(x, ann = FALSE, type = "n") Hit <Return> to see next plot: at this point, the cursor is an hourglass and just waits -- nothing is drawn into the graphics window. This is repeatable on both a Win 98 and Win 2000 ME setup. However, if after starting a new Rgui, I first do > hist(rnorm(100)) > demo(graphics) then both the histogram and the subsequent graphics demo work fine. Stephen -.-.-....

Question about events and addInput
...y program as a separate process and use stdout/stdin to tell the window what text to display - is this a reasonable approach? Q2: When I add the addInput code (below) I can run the FXruby window program from a command prompt and type in text and it updates; however, the window also displays the hourglass icon when the mouse pointer is over it and it blocks using the window cancel button (upper right X) to close it. Am I doing something wrong in my code that blocks the "close" event and causes the hourglass? def onInputData( sender, sel, ptr) @msg.text = $stdin.gets @app.refresh...

regsubsets (Leaps)
...ection criteria should still be useful? I have currently been running regsubsets for over a week with no results. I have no idea if R is still working, or if the computer is hung. I ran regsubsets on a smaller portion of the data, also with linear dependency problems, and got results. However, the hourglass continues its endless spiraling with the full dataset. I am running the following on Windows 7 library(leaps) m_250<-regsubsets(Y~., data=model2, nbest=1, really.big=TRUE) (NOTE: The ~ is a tilda, not a dash, in the regression statement above: Y~.) Does anyone have any opinions on: 1) is R li...

New User General Fail
...different Windows games in Wine with the same effect. Wine runs the installer just fine and adds the program to its 'Programs' list in the Application toolbar (Ubuntu Hardy, btw). When I try to run anything off this list, I get a little Wine icon in the taskbar, and the cursor goes to an hourglass for a few, then it closes out. This is even for, say, text readme's, however Notepad, which came already installed in Wine, works just fine. I didn't run from the command prompt because I couldn't find any exe file made by the installer. I did explore the "C;" drive in Wine...

Application -almost- working
...window. A file, then a tune may be selected here. One of the functions available in the tune selection window is the ability to "Draw" the standard notation (staves, notes, rests, etc.). This is done in a different window. After the first running, the program hangs with a Windows style hourglass when it should be making the rendering. The window (and program) may be closed by clicking on the X in upper right. In the console, I get the error: fixme:hook:SetWindowsHookEx16 hook type 1 broken in Win16 Searching usenet I have found a few references to this message but not anything that he...

Boot process slow with rhgb quiet on
...er boots in 1 minute and 30 seconds. If I boot with "rhgb quiet" on, my computer boots in 3m11s. That's a long time to wait. Significantly, when booting with "rhgb quiet", right at the moment X takes over, there is a 1m36s pause where the screen is blank except for the hourglass cursor turning around and around. Of course, if my main priority was to simply boot quickly, I would simply remove the "rhgb quiet" option from the boot process. And I'm not opposed to doing that. However, this pause only started happening recently, so I wonder why it exists at a...

weird loop selecting print driver from w2k client w/ samba 2.2.5 w/ patches
After uploading the print drivers from w2k and pressing OK or Apply... or selecting this printer from the uploaded drivers and pressing OK and Apply, the printer properties window hourglasses and my machine logs fill up with the messages below. The general idea is, it opens the 15 files that were uploaded for the drivers. Then reopens and closes each one, then closes them all. This process is repeated over and over again while windows print properties shows the hourglass. I...

Slow connection and browsing
...e it is not a Samba issue, but I was just hoping that someone may have experienced it and knows if there is a solution. When I have the current Novell Netware client installed on XP machines, any initial browsing or opening of connected Samba drives is painfully slow. Slow as in 20-30 seconds. The hourglass appears and things just seem to lock for that time. Then, magically, things start working normally. Once I browse or connect to the server, it works perfectly for a $foo amount of time. If I step away, come back and try to read a drive, browsing it then comes to a halt and freezes again. Now, if I...

Reloading a shared library with dyn.load
Hi, I'm using dyn.load to load a shared library (compiled from C code) into R. If I dyn.unload it and then dyn.load it again, I get an hourglass icon in Rgui (R 1.7.0, Win 2000), and it just sits there forever. I can't press Escape to stop the current computation, but I can close Rgui without resorting to using the Task Manager. Is it a problem with my use of R_alloc? Do I need something like R_cleanup? Or is it a problem with d...

log(0) error is not handled in xyplot, Windows
...The initial problem was that when running the following script (Windows XP, R 1.8.1 as well as R 1.9.0): > lset(col.whitebg()) > xyplot(rdens ~ annee | habitat, > groups = sp, type = 'b', > scales = list(y = list(log = TRUE))) I got a crash (just show the "hourglass" icon, stay on, GUI.exe no longer answer, and I must interrupt the process via Windows...) When the following is used: > lset(col.whitebg()) > xyplot(rdens+1 ~ annee | habitat, > groups = sp, type = 'b', > scales = list(y = list(log = TRUE))) It draws the p...

Windows explorer pop-up descriptions: unfair to Samba
...after the user moves his mouse away, this recursion continues and can take minutes to complete (imagine a very large directory structure). Frighteningly, sometimes (but not always), Explorer.exe locks up waiting for this process to complete. During the "lock up", the user experiences an hourglass/spinning_blue_wheel and the explorer window does not refresh. Question: Why does it seem like this undesirable "lock up" happens only when connected to a Samba server and not when connected to a genuine Windows Server? Answer: ? Question: Why do users report relief after disabling &quo...
