hostapd or other AP software for Centos
Is there a recent rpm available for hostapd?
I found 0.6.0 over at atrpms.net via rpmfind. Actually a more recent
ver than available for FC8,9, or 10! But
http://hostap.epitest.fi/hostapd/ shows the current version is 0.6.7.
And does anyone have this running on Centos?
Is there a 'better' AP software? I have the Atheros card...

Hostap Shorewall and lld2l
None of my systems can use lld2d to map the network when connected via
wireless, but it works fine over the wireful network. the wireless is
client -> hostapd -> ath5k -> bridge -> kernel with shorewall handling
the bridge and kernel, as best I can explain it. on the bridge is also
a wired device and a bunch of other PCs. the wired PCs can all map
using lld2d just fine.
lld2d is a windows vista inspired device discovery sort of thing. it...

working properly.
What tools do people recommend for sniffing and checking a wireless network ?
In terms of IDS, is there any way to see if people are trying to
bruteforce the network ? I see hostap has nice logging, but anything
beyond that ?
e.g. with a bad psk on the client
hostapd: ath0: STA 00:0b:6b:2b:bb:69 IEEE 802.1X: unauthorizing port
is there a way to black list MAC addresses, or just allow certain
ones from even trying ? IPSEC will be running on top, but I still
want a decent level of security on the transport layer.
On the client I have

I've configured it quite simple ...
/etc/sysconfig/network_scripts:
ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-wlan0 have this: BRIDGE=br0
ifcfg-br0 is LAN (Dual-Stack)
ifcfg-eth1 is WAN (IPv4only)
ifcfg-sit1 is an HE IPv6 tunnel (IPv6only)
/etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf has this:
interface=wlan0
bridge=br0
/etc/sysconfig/ip(6)tables have at the last lines this:

Madwifi drivers afeter 2.6.18-128.
I have a atheros wiifi card on my Centos 5 that I use as a access
point using hostapd. I noticed that after the upgrade to kernel
2.6.18-128 or above, the atheros driver comes with the kernel, ath5k,
and it does?t let hostpad ou iwconfig set master mode on the card.
Up to kernel 2.6.18-92 is workedd just fine using madwifi from
rpmforge.
Any ideas on that?

Stronger security with BSD Firewall and Freeradius
I've seen that is possible to use switch port blocking with freeradius
and cisco switches via 802.1X and EAP protocol. Here is more info:
http://wiki.freeradius.org/FreeRADIUS_Active_Directory_Integration_HOWTO
What if I don't have switch that supports 802.1X or I want that blocking
is done by FreeBSD, not the switch. Because FreeBSD is the firewall or
gateway to some networks. Is there

Strange behaviour of Samba3 with wireless clients
...ocal
LAN on eth1 is identical to ath0 so I don't see a problem there. In fact
I can do everything on my wireless clients except Samba.
Here are some details of my setup:
Ubuntu 7.10 server
eth0 - ADSL modem; running pppoe
eth1 - local LAN
ath0 - wireless LAN
madwifi drivers for Atheros chips
hostapd to handle WPA2+PSK authentication
iptables for IP filtering
samba3
Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance.

virtual wlan0
HI!
My goal is to run a virtualized access point with hostapd.
Is it possible to use the host's WIFI interface in a VM created with libvirt? I
can add the interface in bridged mode but it appears just as normal eth1 without
wireless extensions.
Ciao, Michael.

Strange IPv6 in FreeBSD 9.1RC1
HI Folks,
I've got two boxes that I recently moved from -stable to 9.1rc1. I did
them one at a time, with about a week between the upgrades. After the
first upgrade, I noticed something strange with networking but didn't
really dig into it much. After the second upgrade immediately experiencing
the same issues, I figured it seemed to be something related to 9.1rc1.

A consistent set of expectations does wonders for debugging odd-ball
occurrences. Why learn the idiosyncrasies of two distros when one
suffices? Just start with a minimal CentOS install on

Routing squid to a different gateway
Hi all,
I''ve been using shorewall 3 (3.4.8 now) for a while on a simple gateway
setup for my office. Routing is enabled only for a few hosts and all user
access the internet thru squid, which is running on the shorewall box. I
have a few other services on this box and some others on another server, but
they don''t matter for what I need.
Quick and dirty schematics to illustrate
