TIP for broken ARIN whois
This works for me on Centos 5.6. It may assist newcomers to the Linux world of Centos. whois 51.51.51.51 produces a normal and conventional display of data. However since ARIN, the North American registrar of IP addresses, "modernised" its WHOIS processing, a query to whois 64.64.64.64 will produce a one line summary of possible matches, which always includes ARIN, but omits the

Stuck ...can't get sapply and xmlTreeParse working
Can't seem to get the code below working. It gets stuck on line 24 inside the function hm; comments show the line in question. The function hm is called by sapply and is at the bottom of the code. Other stuff above line 24 works correctly including the first couple of lines of the function hm. Should I be using a different apply function or am I doing something wrong with xmlTreeParse ?...

Is there any way to pass objects() called with a pattern to anova()....

Hm, dispatch protocol error
I've been getting a few locked sessions (unable to ctrl-c, ctrl-z it) with the message: Hm, dispatch protocol error: type 20 plen 136 I've never seen this message before openssh-SNAP-2000082900, and it's only happened when connected to SSH 2.3.0, from openssh-SNAP-2000082900. Both machines are mips-sgi-irix6.5. Anybody care to explain what it means? Is it a known bug? -jf

Fitting a distribution to peaks in histogram
Hello list! I would like to fit a distribution to each of the peaks in a histogram, such as this: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7029/2724/1600/DU145-Bax3-Bcl-xL.png . The peaks are identified using Petr Pikal peaks function ( http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu/R/Rhelp02a/archive/33097.html), but after that I am quite stuck. Any idea as to how I can: Fit a distribution to each peak Integrate the

Restricting logins to certain clients
I run samba-3 as PDC for a small domain with 4 clients. User A should be allowed to login on all client machines, while logins for the privileged user B should be restricted to 2 machines for security reasons. Any ideas how to manage that? Suggestions for further reading would be highly appreciated? Hans Musil

What is has_many :through really buying you over HABTM?
So having just learned how to do has_many :through as opposed to HABTM, and then, being concerned that I wouldn''t get it to work, I started thinking about these two approaches. It seems to me that the _only_ problem that the HM:T (has_many :through) approach solves that HABTM doesn''t is the issue of the potential collision of id columns between your join table and one of your joined tables. [ Actually, now that I read the dance-off blog (http://blog.hasmanythrough.com/articles/2006/04/20/many-to-many-dance-o...
