We're using Samba 3.0.21a-1 on a CentOS 4.2 server (kernel 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp); everything works more or less fine, it's functioning as the PDC with an OpenLDAP back end (setup essentially straight from the Idealx.org playbook), etc. We're trying to mount Windows shares to back them up, and getting "permission denied" errors when trying to read certain files from those

customizing help()
Hi I tried to customize help(), so it starts the compiled html help, and searches in all packages. I wrote the following function: > my.help function(topic){ help(topic, package=.packages(all=T), lib.loc=.lib.loc, chmhelp=T) } When I use it with >my.help(help) give the following error: Error in help(topic, package = .packages(all = T), lib.loc = .lib.loc, : No documentation

Defective help pages
I'm trying to diagnose a bizarre problem in which the help files invoked from R are partially defective. help(), for instance, is missing the Description, Arguments and See Also sections; as are help files for other commands (see below). I've built 2.8.1, 2.10.1 and HEAD with the same results; do I need to set an environment or configuration variable? help

Help Files Now Load in the Internet Browser?
Hello, I recently had to reinstall R on my windows machine, because MASS mysteriously vanished from my packages list. Before, when I used help(), the files would load in a Windows help window. Now, the help files load in my internet browser, which actually is problematic because I always made use of the contents/topics list to browse the help files in the Windows Help window. ("I don't

help with help()
Hi all Just this morning I upgraded to R 2.12.0 (for Mac OS X 10.6.4). All went well until I needed to run a help() or help.search() in my session, which I'm running within Emacs (ESS 5.3.7). Say I need help with the command 'density'. When I type help(density) or ?density the ESS help buffer opens, it is titled *help[R](density)* but it contains only a couple of lines saying,

Hi All: I lately get a lot more spam-porn type emails lately also but I don't know if they are due to me being on the R-list. how to search r-help?
I am new to this listand am unable to get the search tools listed on https://stat.ethz.ch/mailman/listinfo/r-help towork. What do people use to search the help archives? 1. The google search box on http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/~rking/R/ returns a 404 error. 2. The http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu/ site has many references but I don't see how to search r-help from there. 3. The

Help on getting help from manuals
Hi, A number of people have suggested "I read the manuals"... Could someone help me by telling me where the primary start point is please? For example, I am interested in writing functions with variable number of arguments - where should I start to look? "An introduction to R" only show a brief example - with no pointer to where to find further data. I can't do ?xxx

R-help Digest, Vol 212, Issue 4
Hi -- there are lots of replies --I have not read them all, if someone else suggested this, sorry for duplication. This is similar to the suggestion using mapply, but not specific to matrices. In fact it's a kludge that applies to many settings. You 'sapply' over the index 1:2, and pass a, b as arguments: a <- c(1,4) b <- c(5,8) sapply(1:2, FUN=function(x, a, b)a[x]:b[x],
