Hi Helmet,
Greeting from the USA! I was stationed in Germany for three
years in the seventies. I absolutely adored Germany and
still miss it at times.
An ftp server can be set up to require a username and password.
And that can be different than the Windows user name and password.
That should throw a wr...

The Environment variables settings in bin/R, why do they ignore environment variables of the same name?
Hello,
In installation/R/bin/R i notice
1. R_HOME_DIR is hard coded e.g.
R_HOME_DIR=/usr/local/lib64/R
2. It ignores R_HOME_DIR
echo "WARNING: ignoring environment value of R_HOME"
3. R_SHARE_DIR, R_INCLUDE_DIR and R_DOC_DIR are also hard coded.
Is there a reason why these settings do not read the values from the
environment variables of the same name (assuming they exist) and

See above. Which problems do you see introduced by my patch?
IMHO "we don't do it right because it might paper over other problems"
is a poor reason for not patching. ("I don't need seatbelt or a helmet
because if my head gets hurt there is a different problem.")

The lessons of:

I don't think defining "do it right" as "I'd rather you disable checking
in the software for everyone than configure it locally to do what I want"
is very helpful here. Especially not if the only re...

[PATCH tftpd-hpa] tftpd: don't use AI_CANONNAME and AI_ADDRCONFIG to resolve addresses for bind
AI_CANONNAME is only relevant when the resulting official name is used,
which is not the case in tftpd for the address to bind to. Also
AI_ADDRCONFIG isn't helpful. This flag is good for sockets used to
connect(2) somewhere. But for listening sockets it makes tftpd fail to
start when -a 0.0.0.0:69 is passed and no network device is up yet.
This addresses Debian bug

MIT vs GPL vs LGPL for open source project
I intend to release a project I wrote with Rails.
What is the right licensing scheme for a web application (content
managing system) which could grow with plugins and add-ons ?
Personally, I would prefer the GPL but does that mean any add-on to the
CMS (like task management) will have to be GPL ?
If some people contribute to the code could it still be double-licenced
so that the people who
