New Introduction
Hi all,
I''ve just rewritten the Puppet introduction from scratch:
https://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/PuppetIntroduction
I think it''s better, but I''m not convinced it''s a whole heckuva lot
better.
Comments are very much appreciated, especially if you can recommend a
better approach to the document. I tried to organize it how I have
been giving presentations, although clearly in far more detail, but I
also wrote the whole thing in one sitting (with a sprained wrist, no...

This is a bug, right? (--link-dest)
I had a heckuva time getting hard link snapshot backups to work. I traced
my troubles down to what appears to be an rsync bug:
This works as expected (a hard link is made)
************
rm -rf a b
mkdir a b
echo foo > a/tmp
rsync -a a/ b/a.1
rsync -a --link-dest=../a.1 a/ b/a
ls -i b/*/tmp
the above yields, fo...

Pupppet Ruby DSL
...ght much about how this would look in real life, but I
figured I''d at least look at what a DSL in Ruby would look like and
see if it was an incredibly bad idea.
I still don''t know. It feels like it''s basically as restricted as
the language, but certainly it''s a heckuva lot less code than
Puppet''s parser is.
Any comments? Should I commit this to subversion, just to keep it
around in case people want to mess with it?

Multiple swap partitions
I have a machine with two swap partitions (sda2 and sda8). Both will
have none as mount point. When I try to use puppet (using mount type)
for managing fstab I get problems because "name" in both instances
(i.e. mount path) will be "none". How should I fix this within puppet?

Icecast 2 questions.
...akes it all sound like it's underwater. :(
Maybe I have something messed up in the playlist config. It didn't
like when I changed it from 2 to 1 channels. I guess the samplerate and
channels is dependent on the ogg file being re-encoded.
The OGG stream of the live broadcast sounds a heckuva lot clearer
than a MP3 of similar bitrate though!

Comment editor?
Hi everyone,
Is there an Ogg Vorbis comment editor out there, to edit the comment
fields in an already-written Ogg Vorbis stream/file?
Regards,
Alex.

Icecast 2 questions.
Hi Geoff!
Thanks for your help on all of this!
Well everything compiled happily. libshout, ices and icecast.
I've been messing about with ices and icecast .xml config files
but I'm a bit confused.
Does this new ices only handle live input from the sound card or
can I send it a batch of files to use?
I'm not even sure that it's working because when icecast runs, and
ices runs, I

REST/XMLRPC backward compatibility?
Hi all,
I''m in the throes of the REST conversion and I''m wondering: How
important is it to retain backward compatibility? The language will
clearly be consistent between the two, but it looks like it''s going
to be a heckuva lot more complicated to keep compatibility for all
network services (as in, for each of them, I''ll have to write a shell
that talks to the new services but provides the old API).
The only real complication for people is that they''d have to run two
servers temporarily, one f...

Type development for the rest of us
Since I had my type development epiphany a couple of days ago, I''ve decided
to write down my understanding of developing simple types, at
http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/PracticalTypes.
I''d appreciate comments from people who already know how to develop types as
to correctness, and also comments from people who are new to type
development about whether it''s a

Best use of 4 drives?
I''m putting together a NexentaOS (b65)-based server that has 4 500 GB drives on it. Currently it has two, set up as a ZFS mirror. I''m able to boot Nexenta from it, and it seems to work ok. But, as I''ve learned, the mirror is not properly redundant, and so I can''t just have a drive fail (when I pull one, the OS ends up hanging, and even if I replace it, I have to
