Problems reading a backup data DVD
...r of my drives will read it. I get mount errors from "not a directory" to something like "unrecognized file system type" and so on, usually after a really long wait and a notice about how the drive is write-protected (duh). Here's what happened most recently: # mount /dev/hdc /mnt mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so # dmesg | tail -40 hdc: cdrom_decode_sta...

Quantum IDE HDD DMA issue.
I am running RH 7.3 with kernel 2.4.18-27.7.x. Recently I have added a new 60GB Quantum IDE hard drive to the server. I have set it up as a MASTER on a separate IDE channel. Two partitions on the /dev/hdc are /dev/hdc1, /dev/hdc2 - both using ext3. For more detailed HDD parameters, this is 'hdparm -i /dev/hdc': ----------------- /dev/hdc: Model=IC35L060AVV207-0, FwRev=V22OA66A, SerialNo=VNVB30G8TD23UH Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs } RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkS...

Software RAID CentOS4
Hi, I have a system with two IDE controllers running RAID1. As a test I powered down, removed one drive (hdc), and powered back up. System came up fine, so powered down installed a new drive (hdc) And powered back up. /proc/mdstat indicatd RAID1 active with hda only. I thought it would Auto add the new hdc drive... Also when I removed the new drive and added The original hdc, the swap partitions were act...

recover data from linear raid
Hello, I had a scientific linux 3.0.4 system (rhel compatible), with 3 ide disks, one for / and two others in linear raid (250 gb and 300 gb each). This system was obsoleted so i move the raid disks to a new scientific linux 3.0.7 installation. However, the raid array was not detected ( I put the disks on the same channels and same master/lsave setup as in the previous setup). In fact

(example) attach-disk guest01 /root/disc1.iso hdc --driver file --type cdrom --mode readonly attach-disk guest01 /root/disc2.iso hdc --driver file --type cdrom --mode readonly My question is, how can I disconnect the image from the cdrom drive using virsh. Because, if I try to detach-disk hdc, I got following errors. virsh # detach-disk guest01...

Questions about kernel updates
The latest CentOS 5 kernel, 2.6.18-8.1.15.el5 broke my box and I had to drop back to 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5 before I could play DVDs with either Xine or mplayer. ( xine-0.99.5-1.el5.rf & mplayer-1.0-0.36.rc1try2.el5.rf ). This is no big deal to me -- as long as I can make certain that the older kernel doesn't go away. If I understand the installonly plugin correctly, an entry of tokeep=4 in

HVMAssist BIOS boot device problem
Hello, The xm config option boot="c" is intended to boot from the "first" harddrive; however, the enumeration of harddrives is independent of device enumeration (hda|hdb|hdc|hdd), leading to unreliable boot device selection. Example A: I am building a Windows HVM appliance which performs file-system level operations over mounted NTFS volumes - for example a file-system level copy. hda is the boot disk of the appliance and contains a single active (bootable) primar...

Bug#595531: xen-utils-common: boot="d" does not boot from CD (documentation issue?)
...hat with hvmloader, the disk device names presented to the vm must by from a specific set that hvmloader knows how to emulate. Names like hd[a-c] and sd[a-c] work, but sr0 does not. While this makes sense, when you think about what hvmloader is doing, it is not obvious. So, the cdrom must be named hdc (sdc might also work; I haven't tried it). Second, for some phy: names (on the host side) you must use the full /dev/xxxx, while for others, you can omit the /dev/. I have not figured out what the rules are. The following works (the vm boots from the cd in the physical drive): disk = [ '...

using audio CDROM with EAC & Suse 10.2 (wine)

However if I insert an audio disk, the hal system does not create any mounting points nor can I find a way to create one, it only lists /dev/hdc any place in kde and if I try to mount /dev/hdc it gives me an error. I tried creating the following : creating the file: /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/95userpolicy/mountpoints.fdi and running then as su: rchal restart but I still don't get anything I can find with winecfg <?xm...

Using cdrecord on CentOS
...some of the tricks and hints included in the book don't seem to work the same way on a standard CentOS 5 install. 1) Am I supposed to be root to use cdrecord and burn an .iso file? 2) How do I specify a device? 'cdrecord -scanbus' doesn't seem to work. Say my CD burner is /dev/hdc, would 'cdrecord dev=/dev/hdc' be the correct way to address it? Cheers, Niki
