Interpreting the example given by Frank Harrell in the predict.lrm {Design} help
Dear list,
I am relatively new to ordinal models and have been working through the example given by Frank Harrell in the predict.lrm {Design} help
All of this makes sense to me, except for the responses, i,e how do i interpret them? i would be extremely grateful if someone could explain the results?
First i establish the date and model -

Harrell's library
Hi everybody.
I'm studying the Harrell's book on regression modeling strategies, and I'd
like to replicate the examples using R (instead of S+). So how's going the
porting of the hmisc and design libraries? Are there available, though in
beta version?
TIA,
Stefano Calza

Question on ldBands function in Hmisc package by Harrell
Has anyone tried to download Hmisc and used ldBands function for calculating
Lan-Demets group sequential boundaries? The write-up in F.Harrell's website
indicates that, besides downloading the package Hmisc, one needs to copy the
progra ld98 from the University of Wisconsin website. As suggested, I did
this but received another error message regarding the search path. I think

Regression Modeling Strategies Workshop by Frank Harrell in Southern California
Dr. Frank E. Harrell, Jr., Professor and Chair of the Department of
Biostatistics at Vanderbilt University is giving a one-day workshop on
Regression Modeling Strategies on Friday, April 29, 2005. Analyses of the
example datasets use R/S-Plus and make extensive use of the Hmisc library
written by Professor Harrell. The workshop is sponsored by the Southern

Trying to reach Frank Harrell
Does anyone have a valid email address for Frank Harrell of Hmisc fame? I've
tried getting in touch with him at both fharrell at virginia.edu and
f.harrell at vanderbilt.edu, but messages to either of those addresses get
bounced. Frank, if you're reading this, please email me from an account that
will accept a reply.

confidence intervals for Harrell's c-index in survival setting
Dear All,
Is it possible to get confidence intervals for Harrell's concordance index or, equivalently, Somer's D using the rms package or in some other way ?
I have survival data it would be the c-index in the Cox model setting
Many thanks

Does anyone know of an R function for computing the Greenland-Robins
variance for Mantel-Haenszel relative risks?
Thanks

Which JAGS interface to use?
Frank (or anyone else), can you offer any comments comparing runjags,
R2jags, rjags ?
I couldn't find any vignettes, nothing except a brief mention on Task Views.

Issue tracking in packages [was: Re: [R] change in, read.spss, package foreign?]
I would vote for allowing a URL or external file name in in DESCRIPTION,
whose contents could be automatically displayed for the user when
needed. Our changelogs are automatically generated by CVS and are on
the web.

Design and Hmisc
I'm looking for design and hmisc version 2.0 for R 1.8 for windows. I've
found design 2.0 in the downloads for R1.7 but not hmisc.
I've also checked Dr. Harrell's site and it only goes to 1.6 for windows.
Any thoughts?

Adding per-panel text to panel strips in lattice xyplot
I would like to add auxiliary information to the bottom of two strips on
each panel that comes from a table look-up using the values of two
variables that define the panel. For example I might panel on sex and
race, showing 3 randomly chosen time series in each panel and want to
add (n=100) in the bottom strip to indicate the 3 curves were sampled
from 100. Is there a not-too-hard way to do

Interpreting the example given by Prof Frank Harrell in {Design} validate.cph
Dear R-help,
I am having a problem with the interpretation of result from validate.cph in
the Design package.
My purpose is to fit a cox model and validate the Somer's Dxy. I used the
hypothetical data given in the help manual with modification to the cox
model fit. My research problem is very similar to this example.
This is the model without stratification:

Help with Latex (Hmisc)
Dear R Users,
I have three questions.
1) Is there a way to get the output tex file to include
\documentclass{report}
\begin{document}
and
\end{document}
so I can generate a PDF straight away. (I am trying to generate hundreds of
these and don't want to have to manually type this in every time I load a
tex file).
2) When I have have a table of greater than 9 columns, the columns to

SAS Macros for R Users Only
I think SAS Macros has capability to call R, and execute it without it
being in the picture anywhere.
So you can use SAS Macros in a file called R.sas
In this you can create a macro called %Describe that can call R , load Hmisc
,run the describe function
Note you will need repeated use of %put in this %describe for the mapping
to take place
Use %INCLUDE to include that file in all SAS

Inefficiency of SAS Programming
If anyone wants to see a prime example of how inefficient it is to
program in SAS, take a look at the SAS programs provided by the US
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for risk adjusting and
reporting for hospital outcomes at

program is a prime example. Look at how you do a vector product in the

CRAN and ggplot2 geom and stat extensions
I am thinking about adding several geom and stat extensions to ggplot2
in the Hmisc package. To do this requires using non-exported ggplot2
functions as discussed in
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18108406/creating-a-custom-stat-object-in-ggplot2
If I use the needed ggplot2::: notation the package will no longer pass
CRAN checks. Does anyone know of a solution? I'm assuming that

HMisc describe -- error with dates
Hello,
I am trying to use HMisc describe on a data frame. I have specified certain
variables as dates using, for example:
df1$aidsdate <- dates(aidsdate,format="day.mon.year", origin=c(month = 1,
day = 1, year = 1960))
When I use describe on the dataframe I get this error:
Error in Ops.dates(weights, x) : * not defined for chron objects
Has anyone had this problem? I had
