After install centos does not find hardrives (SATA)
Hi we installed centos on a Intel server board with LSI rad (no raid configured
for the lsi). in Centos it sees both drives so we software raid them and the
installation goes well and finishes properly. The problem is when the server
reboots it can no longer see the hard drives and no just boots to a low level
diagnostic shell. Any ideas?
Thanks

Something is writing a log
I can just be sittting, doing nothing, and I hear the sound of my
hardrive head moving. Just every so often. Like some process is
writing a log.
I have looked in /var/log and do see occational updates to acpi and
messages, but that does not account for all the clicks.
Is there somewhere else to look for logs? I would really like to know
what process has something...

rsync for transferring harddrive images
Hi,
I have a project where I have to backup (copy /dev/hda on a server) and
recover (copy back) hardrives from the clients. I tried this with rsync
using:
BACKUP: rsync /dev/hda user@host:/path/to/image
RECOVER: rsync user@host:/path/to/image /dev/hda
There is a problem when accessing devices like /dev/hda. The transfer
aborts after a few seconds with the error message:
write failed on /dev...

No Spaces in Directory names
How can I make it so my users can not create folders with spaces in
them? Or allow them to create such folders but rewrite them on the
hardrive with a "_" or some other symbol. I have looked threw the wiki
but couldn't find anything about folder name restrictions or folder name
rewriting (rewrite the space to a "_").
Im having problems with some of the expire and compress scripts when it
hits these types of folder...

Default PXE boot timeout
Hello all,
I have a NFSroot'ed a couple of OS platforms so that servers can have
the option (web access) to:
a. boot off a CentOS NFS root over the network
b. or LOCAL hardrive (FreeBSD).
A Simple script controls this so that if user selects NFS root -
- /etc/dhcpd.conf will be updated to include the filename "pxelinux.0"
parameter and it will find its configuration file based on HW MAC
If selects Free BSD - /etc/dhcpd.conf file is updated so that we

All data "gone," lost+found is left.
So you know, I don't know too much about file systems.
Here is what I did: I have two linux boxes. the first box had many
hardrives in it, but needed to be used in other ways. So I took 4
harddrives out of it and placed it in the other Linux box. I thought it
would be able to read these right away. (maybe this was my mistake?) I
could mount all of the drives in there. three of my drives had all
their data remain intac...

degrading performance
I've been playing with ocfs2 in local mode, and was really suprised
how fast it was. I was playing with extracting a linux distribution
on my hardrive that was tar gzipped (GZIP=-1) and extracting it onto
a different hard drive.
This was with kernel 2.6.28.
ocfs2-5m6s
reiser4-4m19s
reiser3-6m38
jfs-8m18s
ext2-4m7s
ext3-7m18s
xfs-6m29s
ext4m55s
I noticed the delete times were very slow with ocfs2, like xfs is if
you don't add the extra buffe...

Problem using syslinux with hard drive partition
I have been succesful in using syslinux to boot from a hard drive, by dd'ing
a Linux (LRP) image onto the drive and then running syslinux (i.e. dd
if=the_image of=/dev/hda followed by a syslinux /dev/hda), however I'm having
problems getting it to work from a partition on the hardrive. I'm trying to
use syslinux on a small 100MB FAT16 partition (same commands as before, just
replacing /dev/hda with /dev/hda1), but on boot I get the error: "Error
booting operating system". The hard drive is a 40GB drive with hda1 being, as
mentioned before, a 100MB FAT16 parti...

Freeze on boot ?
...i can use only a RS232
console.
I can find some information on the use of lilo on this card with success (a
modified debian).
I have choose to use a mandrake then the mklivecd script to transforme it
in .iso file (wich make it read only). I have create my own script to
transforme the .iso in hardrive image. I had also modified the mklive script
to have a boot script working on harddrive.
The resulting image work with qemu simulator.
The console output work when using the .iso in an other PC.
BUT on the soekris, stop at :

gtasa
...s partiton (yes it is
NTFS filesystem) and it keeps telling me that it couldn't find the
sound card.
So can someone tell me how to fix this issue to be able to run gtasa
(so that i can then run mtasa (multi theft auto) ) That would be
fantastic.
On a sidenote, i am thinking of getting another hardrive (just a cheap,
small one) and installing windows on a filesytem both linux and windows
can read and write to and then using that as my wine folder, and
istalling gtasa on that. Would this work and how do i go about doing it
if it does.
Thanx for your help, it will be greatly appreciated.

Install Centos 6 x86_64 on Dell PowerEdge 2970 and a SSD (hardware probing issues)
I have a fleet of 2970s and we are upgrading the hardrives on the motherboard SATA ports (A/B not the PERC backplane) when a "detecting hardware" is performed the system crashes, reboots and gives an E1422 error code (useless video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhyMeUHJar4).
We narrowed it down to a motherboard BIOS issue, if we remove the...

lucky with the last instructions, valgrind , but I can't seem to get any
more "vuc" files. I hae saved the ones I have and put them into
"/lib/firmware/nouveau" and I have copied them into my external hardrive.
I have tried playing a .mkv video which I know it works with the 313

I know it doesn't work with the nouveau driver and the "vuc" files I
extracted.
I will upload all the output I have created In tar.xz format attached

Hard drive write cache
...cords accidentally get pulled
from the back of the server. Unlikely as it may be I have to consider ALL
possibilities.
So is disabling the write cache a good way to reduce the risk of hard drive
corruption for an Asterisk server? I am not too concerned about the reduced
performance/lifetime of hardrives with write cache disabled since Asterisk
is not a very write intensive environment. Even with lot's of voicemail
going on.
Any other recommendations/links for increasing the reliability of Asterisk
servers?

My little project

booting over usb and won't boot via pxe even after selecting that option
as choice 1 in the bios configuration. I assume that is because the bios
doesn't know of the existence of the ethercard in each machine.
So now I am thinking of creating a dos partition on each machine's
hardrive, installing syslinux thereon, copying the FC3 and LinuxTLE
vmlinuz and initrd.gz files thereto, and creating an appropriate
syslinux.cfg to allow either or both systems to be installed.
After the installation I imagine I can make a boot from this dos
partition, and thence a boot from syslinux, on...

File contents not saving
...NDOWS 98
Second Edition PC, the file properties overwrite the existing file's
properties, but the file contents itself doesn't seem to save.
At the moment I am running Samba 1.9.18, on a Celeron 500MHZ machine.
I've tried reinstalling Windows, changed motherboards, and tried different
hardrives.
What do you Suggest?
Should I try running a later version of Samba?
Thankyou
