Software Protection on centos
Hi, I would like to have a software protection for my hardisk. I have some query regarding that (1) In Centos, is it possible to do a hardisk protection. Ex : Even if the hardisk is taken from a PC and used on another PC, it should not be executable. (2) Also if the entire binary of the source is mounted on a partition say /tmp, is it possible to make...

rsync filling up hardisk on OSX
Hello, I am still ironing out the bugs in my rsync backup soloution. As I said earlier I have it working working initiating from the macs to the linux server, sortof. The sortof part is what I am trying to eliminate. 2 problems: first rsync seems to be filling up the disk on one of my client OSX machines. df showed a little over a gigabyte when i started the backup of the ~=30GB drive I had

memtest86 problem
...ppy image, made by the authors in the .zip file, downloadable from it's homepage, when I use diskemu. Some days ago I found on Bart's page a new method to select boot images on CD with syslinux/isolinux/memdisk. I thought this is my solution! With LiLo I could start the memtest86 image from hardisk, but with diskemu I couldn't. The error number was 8000, and now it's the same when I tried to boot with isolinux/memdisk. A part of my isolinux.cfg: label 5 kernel memdisk append initrd=memtest.img I read the source of syslinux-1.67 - syslinux-1.75, and the memdisk documentation se...

--max-vsize and --max-nsize linux?
...time(for(i in 2:length(tt)){ tt[,i][is.na(tt[,i])] <- 0 }) ...and a win2000(XP2000+,1GB) machine makes it in several minutes, but my linux notebook (XP2.6GHZ,512MB) don't get success after some hours. I recognize that the cpu load is most time relative small, but the hardisk have a lot of work. Is this a problem of --max-vsize and --max-nsize and i should play with that, because i can't believe that the difference of RAM is the reason? Have anybody experience what is an "optimal" setting with i.e. 512 MB RAM in Linux? Many thanks for help and commen...

Very slow samba performance on Centos 6
Hello all, I have 2 identical Dell r510 servers with 10gig card, running centos 6 with samba-3.5.4-68.el6_0.2.x86_64. I setup 16G ramdisk samba share on both and ran cp from local ramdisk to samba ramdisk mount. If I cp 12 1-gig files, I get combined 100MB/s transfer rate. Single file cp maxes out at about 15MB/s. Ftp transfer give me over 300MB/s. Running with 9000 MTU. Most smb.conf is

Re: Problems with Excel & MS Word files (EVEN - still ANY ideas?)
...nd the locked file issue(s) along with it. Any ideas as to what exactly is causing this, it's giving users the same error we've been encountering/patching for wherein they are prompted that the file simply cannot be saved; in some cases Excel will not even allow the user to save locally (to hardisk) and the (client) system requires a full reboot. This happens with different users, on different shares, each attached from varying physical network segments, (100mbit switched network entirely, tree'd off from the main switch at gigabit ethernet speeds including the actual connection to the s...

MAC address changes after cloning
Hi, I have x86 system and have used clonezilla to clone the entire hardisk of system A and restored it on another x86 system, system B. After the cloning process, i notice that the MAC address of the system B in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 is changed and is having the MAC address of system A. The interesting part is that if i do an ifconfig from the b...

Question about securelevel
I've read about securelevel in the mailing list archive, and found some pitfalls (and seems to me to be discarded soon). But According to me, the following configuration should offer a good security: - mount root fs read only at boot; - set securelevel to 3; - do not permit to unmount/remount roots fs read-write (now it is possible by means of "mount -uw /"); - the only way to make

Disk performance
Hi, i use icecast1 with liveice. In the liveice config there is an option for storing the stream remote on the server. Now i'm wondering what kind of hardisk performance you need when you try to store like a 100 streams at the same time? I'm planning to use a scsi disk for it, but is there anyone who allready did this? Thanks in advance Matthijs van Dorp <p>--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ icecast project homepa...

Syslinux & DiskonChip 2000 boo error.
Good afternoon. I am trying to make a 32M DiskonChip2000 boot Linux (kernel version 2.2.20) but I'm having difficulty. It begins fine, loading most of the kernel, but halts immediately after the "Freeing unused kernel memory: 52K freed." step. The implication seems to be that my ramdisk is not being mounted/executed properly. My syslinux.cfg file is as follows: timeout=0

Memdisk Ramdisk survive reboot
...lt;2GByte FAT16 because I need a large ramdisk and I have 4Gbyte ram. Then I make with the Hexeditor an image of the whole <2GB partition including the first 63 sectors with mbr and call it dos.img . I copied this image to another harddisk. Then I set up Syslinux 3.09 with memdisk on a >=2GB hardisk as described in syslinux.doc and memdisk.doc and copied the image dos.img on it. And this boots with memdisk initrd=dos.img (raw does not work) to Dos even from a USB harddisk, which can be removed(!) after booting without systemcrash. When you type boot at commandline, it reboots and the conten...

No subject
boot - stops the network boot and boots of the hard disk install - allows a manual installation of redhat ksinstall - starts a kickstart install of redhat for unattended. Pxe shippe with linux has a similar option boot from hardisk or network.. Now I'm havin problems with the 'boot' option. I can't get the nbp to mount the file system on the scsi hard disk. So my question is, is there a way you can set an option in the tftpboot/pxelinux/default that exits your network boot program (similar to original red...

[Bug 2472] New: A different kind of the 'mkdir "*" failed: File exists' bug.
...6.2 there was a bug that showed an error: mkdir "/foo/bar/blah" failed: File exists This was fixed, thank you. However, using 2.6.3 this message is still occuring when a SOURCE DIRECTORY tree was deleted as shown in the example below. Explanation: I have a number of large USB based hardisks I use to store incremental backups. This harddisks are attached to the most central machine which uses rsync to connect to other machines as well as "to itself" (I use tapes as well). Anyway, I deleted some users on one machine including their home directories as I had moved them to an...

HVM direct boot broken in xen-unstable
Hi! On x86_64, changeset 18081, running/building on rhel5, trying to use the HVM direct boot causes the domain to reboot immediately and then the log says the domain is restarting too rapidly. No obvious hints as to where the problem is. If I build the in-tree ioemu code, things work. Any clues as to where to look or how to get some useful debugging output? Thanks, John Byrne
