Rsync behaviour on harddisc crash
I was just pondering: Lets look at Server A with one extra harddisc hdb, where hdb1 is mounted at /mnt/folder. /mnt/folder is the folder which should be mirrored on Server B. So Server B rsyncs rsynch -a -delete server::folder /folder from Server A and gets all the new files and deletes all the files, which doesn't exist on Server A's /mnt/folder anymore. What would happen,

Filesystem backup?
Hi all. I'm currently having a following problem: I have only ssh connection to a CentOS 5.2 system, there are two harddiscs on it. One stores the system (/ filesystem) and the other should be used to help restore the system in case of first disks' failure. I thought that maybe dump would be a good utility to make it. But in only works on read-only filesystems. In one article I've read that making a snapshot of t...

run programs .exe from cdrom/dvd
Some of my programs need to be starting from cdrom or dvd after execution of the local .exe from harddisc. How is the proceeding to achieve a running program from cdrom/dvd? The link from .wine/windos/dosdevices to the cdrom and dvd is already established and works. May it's necessary to write a shell script to run after start from cdrom/dvd. On the other hand, may it would help to make a copy

Donations to Xiph
...s donated or not? We could "sell" links on that page for extra cash or not? == Making needs public == I was wondering if it is a good idea to make our needs public if we have concrete numbers like other pages are doing. Like "out servers takes x dollars per month" or "new harddiscs x dollards" or .. == Input/output optimizations == Feel free to invite me meetings about input/output optimizations discussing questions like "should we buy x or y". I am "optimizer inside(tm)", feel free to make use of that ;-) == Programming deal == I am currently dis...

Running filesystem backup?
Hi all. I currently have a problem. I try to make a backup of a running / filesystem to a second disc. I've read tha some people use rsync for it. I mount the second harddisc at /mnt/hdb1 and issue a command: rsync -vaHx --progress --numeric-ids --delete \ --exclude-from=asylum_backup.excludes --delete-excluded \ / /mnt/hdb1 Then I shutdown the system, remove the first disc and try

is udev necessary?
Hi all I recently setup a CentOS 5.2 server, running XEN (using HyperVM), and then moved the hard drive from my test box to my Intel server. The problem I now have, is that it doesn't bootup properly. Shortly after I see the udev service started, the machine reboots. This keeps on going the whole time. I have managed to kill udev on start-up (with CTRL + C), and then it boots up. So, do I

copying between shares
this seems to be a bug and not a security issue having two shares on a samba server but on different disks it is possible to copy/delete a file from one share to another but not to move (using a win98 workstation). Using the same disk moving is possible. Some time before it was possible and Windows made the copy. Now it seems the samba-server has to copy and doesnt. this is samba 2.2.0.15,

WinXP needs a lot of time to read files from Samba Share
Hi! After installing a SuSE 8.0 Enterprise with Samba 2.2.3a, I've a lot of trouble with accessing files on my configured Samba shares. If I want to open a file on one of the shares with a double click in the Windows Explorer (WinXP) it needs exactly 50 seconds (!!!) to REALY open that file. If I use an application - the file will be open immediatly. Another problem is, that I've now the

CRAN mirror size mushrooming; consider archiving some?
Hi, everybody I'm setting up a new CRAN mirror and filled up the disk space the server allotted me. I asked for more, then filled that up. Now the system administrators want me to buy an $800 fiber channel card and a storage device. I'm going to do that, but it does make want to suggest to you that this is a problem. CRAN now is about 68GB, and about 3/4 of that is in the bin folder,

Hello, I''m going to be helping a friend setup Shorewall in place of his Cisco router on his home network. Shorewall will be acting as the router/firewall gateway for internet access for his home LAN. His connection to the ISP is via PPPOE. Nothing unfamiliar here to me. It will be a standard 2 interface setup. My curiosity was peaked when he said that he is going to be installing
