Kerberos in the handbook
Is anyone currently working on updating the Kerberos documentation in
the Handbook? if so, I'd like to help. If not, I'm hoping to find
someone who can get me up to speed on the FreeBSD docbook extensions :-)

[Kerberos] Error at Handbook?
Hi!
I'm quite new to the list, but searching the archive and PRs didn't
show me anything on the matter.
According to FreeBSD Handbook (14.8.2 Setting up a Heimdal KDC) one
should config DNS server by adding:
-----
_kerberos IN TXT EXAMPLE.ORG.
-----
This doesn't work. DNS servers returns: text = "EXAMPLE.ORG.".
This is right, because RFC 1035 allows up to 16 character strings at
this field (assuming...

Audit handbook chapter review, call for general testing
Dear All,
Over the past week or so, I have spent some time updating Tom Rhodes'
excellent FreeBSD Handbook chapter on Audit for some of the more recent audit
changes, such as new features in more recent OpenBSM versions. Since FreeBSD
6.2-BETA2 contains what is likely the final drop of the audit code (modulo any
bug fixes) for 6.2-RELEASE, now would be a great time for people interested in
Audit to...

Errors in the FreeBSD handbook (MAC framework)
(crossposted to freebsd-security just in case someone has to slap me) :)
Hello,
I'm doing some work with the MAC subsystem in FreeBSD, and I have
spotted some errors in the MAC documentation in the handbook.
1- Section 15.14.4. Error in the example dropping users "nagios" and
"www" into the insecure class. The example uses the command "pw
usermod nagios -L default" when it should obviously be "pw usermod
nagios -L insecure". The same holds for the "w...

IPSec VPNs: to gif or not to gif
I will shortly be replacing a couple of proprietary VPN boxes
with a FreeBSD solution. Section 10.10 of the Handbook has a
detailed description of how to do this.
However I remember a lot of discussion about a year ago about
whether the gif interface was necessary to set up VPNs like
this or whether it was just a convenience, for "getting the
routing right". A number of people said that gif was not

Kerberos to file server
...both the
FreeBSD box as well as the shares on the AS/400. I don't want to have users
log into the FreeBSD box then need to again do a login again to the AS/400.
From what I've read thus far it "seems" that configuring Kerberos between the
two is the way to go about this. The handbook talks about setting up a
remote loging kind of thing, but nothing about how to handle NFS permissions.
I also don't quite get how to automate the process of authenticating and
mounting upon initial login.
Question 1: Am I heading down the right road, or are there other options I
should be...

GSoC proposals soon due & student handbook
Hi everyone,
As we're closing in on the time when proposals need to be written and
handed in, I'd like to point out the great student guide to GSoC:
https://web.archive.org/web/20150315023159/http://en.flossmanuals.net/GSoCStudentGuide/#
As you may notice this points to Archive.org, that is because
flossmanuals seems to be currently down. That's an additional reason why

Users handbook
At the most recent project I completed I have to post a intranet web
page with instructions on using the system and phones. Asterisk is 1.07
stable and the phones are Polycom IP300, IP500, and IP600.
Has anyone done an Astersik users guide? Something non-technical but
covering most of the features an office worker would use.
If nothing exists, should we develop this as a documentation project?

Installing FreeBSD-Stable and Upgrading to FreeBSD-Stable
I am a newbie trying to get the most current Stable version of FreeBSD
running. I have been using CVS to update my system, but things don't work
after an update. For example KDE 3.1 (from KDE 3.0) doesn't start using
startkde.
I am looking for instructions on the best way to Install the lastest
version of FreeBSD-Stable and how to Upgrade the system in the future.
Thanks.

Installing packages from 9.2 Release DVD
Dear All ,
In sysinstall , there are menu items to install packages from release DVD .
In bsdinstall , there is NO such package installation menu items .
Another problem is there is no any available information about this subject
in the Handbook installation pages ( at least I could not find any one one
) .
Is there any such available information link , and is there any possibility
to include such information into Handbook pages and Release Notes templates
?
When there is no such information , people will use

If you had just one book on R to buy...
Hi,
I am starting a new job as a study analyst for a social science
research unit. I would really like to use R as my main tool for data
manipulation and analysis. So I'd like to ask you, if you had just one
book on R to buy (or to keep), which one would it be ? I already
bought the Handbook of Statistical Analysis Using R, but I'd like to
have something more complete, both on the statistical point of view
and on R usage.
I thought that "Modern applied statistics with S-Plus" would be a good
choice, but maybe some of you could have interesting suggestions ?
Thanks in ad...

freebsd vpn server behind nat dsl router
...ave dynamic public ips on the internet side,
and private ips on the lan side.
As you can see in the diag, I am trying to have the vpn traffic from the
internet forwarded to the Freebsd vpn (the machines ending in .254 on each
site). I have followed the Freebsd "VPN over Ipsec" in the handbook, and
created a tunnel between the two vpn servers; according to the handbook, I
should be able to ping the vpn servers using their private network
addresses, but I am not able to do that. I realize that my implementation
is not exactly like the handbook's, but what do I need to do to get i...

About kern.ipc.somaxconn and netstat
Hello.
We have a webserver using FreeBSD, we read about tunning kern.ipc.somaxconn (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/configtuning-kernel-limits.html) so the OS can handle all the connections. Is there a way to know how many connections are established in a certain moment?. I know about netstat(1) but is there any other command that we can use to know the exact amount of how many connections are established?.
