locating intervals (corrected version)
...ing over the data in X,Xi, but I suspect there
may be a faster and more elegant way to do this in R.
In Python (Numeric) the same can be achieved with
ix=Numeric.searchsorted(X[1:-1],Xi),
which is quite compact.
So, does anyone know of a corresponding R call that can achive the same?
Sincerely,
Halldór

bivariate linear interpolation
...ts)
In R there is (as often) the choice between many different
interpolation routines. Akima has one for irregularly spaced
data (and does not like co-linearity in the data). Fields has another
one, with a more complicated arguments.
What is the best R function that accomplishes this?

image function with date-time on X axis
...t;-.POSIXt", "Ops.difftime") for "-"
2: In is.vector(X) :
Contrast the x axis result of image with that of plot
plot(tax,rnorm(length(tax)))
where the date-time shows stamps work fine.
How can I get image to behave (or is there a better function for the job?)
Sincerely

read.table and variable length of tables

If I set nrows=98 I run into the trailing section.
>From day to day the table length changes. Is there a way to get read.table to always read in the correct
length and just stop when it hits the trailing section?
Sincerely,

Windows plots & fontsize
...tup since it might have an effect on other
programs.
One simple solution is to use par(ps=10), but I cannot find out how to
set this globally.
a) Does anyone know how I can set par(ps=10) by default on all figure?
b) Is there a windows specific way to set default fontsizes in figures?
Thanks,
Halld?r

How to know what device I am using
Some years ago I wrote a plotting routine that was run
on both Linux & Windows computers.
There were some differences in the way the plot looked
from the windows device and the X11 device.
To ensure consistency I used
getOption("device"))
and made some changes to the plotting if the windows device was being used.
Using this routine again, years later, I now notice that

I understand that Mandrake 10.1 uses Xorg instead of XFree86,
but am under the impression that these are compatible.

plot with dates
...o R so I may be wrong about this, but it seems to me that
different plotting methods are invoked. methods(plot) yields a list of
plot methods, but I cannot access most of them.
Is there a way to guide plot(b) to using the method used by
plot(b$novdate,b$y), - or is that a bad idea?...

Reasons to Use R
Dear All,
The institute I work for is organizing an internal workshop for High
Performance Computing (HPC).
I am planning to attend it and talk a bit about fluid dynamics, but
there is also quite a lot of interest devoted to data post-processing
and management of huge data sets.
A lot of people are interested in image processing/pattern recognition
and statistic applied to geography/ecology, but I
