SUGGESTION: rsyncing gziped source with non gziped destination
Would it be possible to make rsync capable to sync gziped source (at server) with non gziped detination file? PROBLEM: The rsyncd server provides a few *frequently* accessed, slow changing, *big* text files (DNS RBL zones). It seems that the source files are too big to stay in memory caches and rsync sessions cause to many hard disk I/O operations. M...

Security hole #3: zlib plugin allows opening any gziped mboxes
zlib plugin allows opening gzipped mboxes as read-only mailboxes. However when using it, the mailbox name checks are bypassed so it's possible to open for example "../otheruser/somefile.gz". Only valid gzipped mbox files can be opened, and only if their name ends with ".gz". You can fix this by upgrading to v1.0.rc29 (available soon) or with this patch:

SIS attachments compressed
Hello: In case it is defined to use zlib compression, does SIS save attachments compressed? I have found this question replied in the past (2012) and the answer was NO. I ask again just to know if there have been changes or if it is in the roadmap to add compression. I have been testing to migrate from maildir+zlib to mdbox+zlib+sis and the results, in terms of space used, and worst than

problem with read.table -- example
...le it reads the first column as row names, although I have not noticed any special binary symbols around line 51 either. This problem seems to happen with this particular file, I could easily read in a 12000 rows x 22 cols table. I add my problematic file (it is really small) here, in a uuencoded gziped form. What I did was: > a <- read.delim("tab20.and") Error in "row.names<-.data.frame"(*tmp*, value = row.names) : duplicate row.names are not allowed I am interested if anybody (specially on RH 7.1) is able to read the table in the same way. Thanks in advance, Ot...

Bug#406973: logtail misses lines in rotated file
Package: logtail Version: 1.2.52 Severity: normal Tags: patch Hi, When a logfile is rotated, logtail misses the lines logged between the last logtail run and the logfile rotation. The attached patch allows to set an alternate logfile that logtail tries to use as the old logfile if the inode has changed. It can be used as: logtail -f /var/log/syslog -a /var/log/syslog.1 (Please note that this

Help: Marvell sk98lin driver missing from Centos 3 PXE initrd.img
...361 "sk98lin" "Gigabit Ethernet Controller" (With tabs not spaces) I also added the following line to /tmp/initrd.fs/modules/modules.pcimap sk98lin 0x000011ab 0x00004361 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000 After unmounting initrd.fs, I re-gziped initrd.img, and copied over /tftpboot/linux-install/initrd.img However, my problem still remains. When I pxe boot, the machine is detected and everything. Just before getting the kickstart file, it complains "Unable to find any devices of the type needed for this installation type". Ob...

Strange problem with my new PDC
Hi everyone , I have setup a new Server, based on Ubuntu Linux. Since the Samba version from it's repository was too old for my purposes, I downloaded and installed Samba from source (version 3.5.8). Everything went fine so far. We currently run an older version (3.0.26a) of samba as PDC . I copied the tdbsam databases from the current PDC over to the new one. This seems to have worked

booting initramfs
Hi all I'm trying to boot with initramfs I build my own root fs, and the kernel build links it, I have double checked this when the kernel boots unpack_to_rootfs() returns no error, so it continues and .... when It tries to mount the rootfs it tries to mount from an IDE device (where the kernel was built from), and not from the initramfs "image" I think this is not documented

Desirable Properties of a Real Metadata Format
I suggest gzipped XML. Feel free to suggest something that isn't XML if you dislike it that much. Anyhow, as a practical matter, Vorbis-style metadata lacks a Really Good Way to have the same data in multiple languages. Or at least a widely-agreed upon way. So, howzabout... <data> <title xml:lang='en'>Mars, the Bringer of War</title> <title

Using zip format for help pages, examples, etc.
At the Vienna meeting we discussed the problems encountered on some operating systems when storing many small files in a directory. In particular the directories $RHOME/library/base/help/, $RHOME/library/base/R-ex/, and $RHOME/library/base/data/ can take up an enormous amount of storage on the Macintosh or on Windows systems because the minimum amount of storage per distinct file is quite large.

Ubuntu Jaunty samba 3.3.2 print$ no write rights even though I do; -)
Initially when I posted my access problems to print$ I was using the new registry based smb.conf I had my whole configuration in the registry. Now I move my printers and print$ back to the text based smb.conf and I copied the standard ubuntu debian [printers] and [print$] out of the original ubuntu package smb.conf and the only modification that I made was under the [print$] I change read only to

Prototype Size?
There''s a good article at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4616700.stm that says, in a nutshell, that people form their impression of a Web site in 50 milliseconds. With an 80K download for prototype, that leads me to ask: "how can page sizes be trimmed and still use cool features"? I recognize that browsers may feel free to download these scripts asynchronously, but
