UPS wiring question (electrical code)
In the US, our National Electrical Code requires (being a little fuzzy
as this is just setup to ask my real question):
grounding conductor (earthing conductor in UK, "green wire" in US)
bonded from the main ground system (more or less at the entrance
panel) to all exposed metal including case and ground bus of any

Two-way linear model with interaction but without one main effect
Hi,
I know that the type of model described in the subject line violates
the principle of marginality and it is rare in practice, but there may
be some circumstances where it has sense. Let's take this imaginary
example (not homework, just a silly made-up case for illustrating the
rare situation):
I'm measuring the energy absorption of sports footwear in jumping. I

FXO line hum w/ Z-plex 10
I've recently begun integrating an Asterisk system into my house. I
purchased the Dev Kit a year or two ago when Digium was selling it as a
Z-plex 10 channel bank with the T100P.
I've recently found that when I connect the serial monitoring port to my
system it introduces a noticable hum on my incoming FXO lines. Anyone
know (or have suggestions about) how to prevent this?

[Off Topic] humour, XMAS, ground loop - good business strategy
hi, I received this e-mail which contains a "ballad", at first I thought it
was junk mail, but then I read through it, for the EE members of this list,
it may be quite humorous.
I don't know if the ballad is original, but at least it's the XMAS season,
so it's something to lighten up your day, eh?

Hard Ground (On Ring)
We have been experiencing static noise on one of our phone lines
connected to our Adtran Total Access 750 which is then connected to a
T100P card. I was convinced that, after rain storms, the static would
get worse, it was surely a problem of Verizon's. Verizon sent a field
rep out today and he told our secretary (I was busy) that there was a
hard ground on the Ring portion of the line.

Moaning dog...
Here's one for you phone people....
An elderly lady phoned her telephone company to report that her telephone
failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions when it
did ring, her pet dog always moaned right before the phone rang.
The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic
dog or senile elderly lady. He climbed a nearby telephone pole,

Is possible, on biological grounds, suggest to fitdistr (MASS library) that the estimated parameters must be between two values?
...mulating those records that I was able to observe
x<-x[x>105 & x<=135]
#fit truncated normal distribution to the data
fitdistr(x, dtnorm0, start = list(mean = mean(x), sd = sd(x)))
The result of the estimated true mean=132.8, sd=25.9, far from the true
values.
Can I, on biological grounds, suggest to fitdistr that the mean must be a
value, for example, between 90 and 110?
Thanks
David

Sipura spa-2000 / 3000: surge protection
I am located in the UK, and I am using Sipura spa-2000 adapters to
connect analog phones to a voip network. The network connects to the
PSTN as well via the Sipura spa-3000 adapter.
I would like to provide surge protection for the spa-2000 and the
spa-3000 adapters.
1. For spa-2000, fxs port: What is the maximum tip-to-ring voltage
before damage to the the adapter occurs?

nls question
I'm using the nls library to fit peaks in spectra. The model
that I'm using is a quadratic background plus a Gaussian peak.
The peak is well described by the Gaussian and the background is
mostly linear with a bit of quadratic. My goal is an estimate of
the integral (and the uncertainty of the integral) of the peak
without the back ground.
The procedure that I'm using is as

Cisco 7960 Locking Up
Ok... I asked a question a few months back about a 7960 that a user
claims to be "shocking" her in her ear from time to time. A few others
indicated they had similiar issues and alot of them seemed to stem from
power over ethernet. Here's what we've done... We replaced the phone,
ran two new cat5 cables to a different switch, put in a power brick and
disabled power over

not sure how GFI would function at all without a valid ground, unless
the GFI is wired to neutral, which is dangerous on its own.
you might get a 3-prong-to-2-prong adapter and plug the PC into that,
leaving the ground

AstriCon Update: Very Low Priced Ground Transport Available

hotel and arranged/discovered some low cost options:

MARTA, the Atlanta mass-transit system (i.e. train) can get you there. Take
MARTA from the airport north to the Brookhaven station. The hotel shuttle

Ground Start on Asterisk
Has anyone used ground start on Asterisk? I am using a TE110P connected a
Adtran 750 channel bank FXO card. It appears that Asterisk is not setting
the CAS RBS bits properly to seize the line. I can see this with the zttool
and the Adtran admin serial port status. I have configured the zaptel.conf
and Zapata.conf to use fxsgs on those channels.

Middle Ground between POTS and T1?
I was wondering if there was a middle ground between POTS lines and a
T1. I have a new office with a T1 line and while it's working well,
it's a lot of money and we will never use anywhere near 23 lines at one
time. Is it possible to get a few ISDN lines or something and bundle
them together?
Basically I would like to get the digital features of the T1 PRI (DID
number, etc...) but
