Groping for a design pattern on negative configuration elements.
Situation: 1) Machine A was configured with class X. 2) Class X adds a bunch of files, services, etc... 3) User now wants to remove class X from the system. Questions: A) What is the proper method for applying class removal logic such that the system is not burdened with a ton of extra overhead checking for things that don''t exist? B) How should this be done anyway? My gut reaction

Finding 'ncp' for t
Hi Folks, I'm looking for a neat procedure for the following: Given t0 such that pt(t0,df,ncp=0) = alpha (given) find ncp0 such that for given beta pt(t0,df,ncp=ncp0) = (1 - beta) (In other words, what's the ncp such that you get power (1-beta) to detect it, using a 1-sided test with size alpha when ncp = 0?) In the past I've done the groping by hand, but this time it needs

missing packaging/Fedora/makerpms.sh
I downloaded the tar.gz file for 3.0.27a and I noticed there is not a Fedora directory inside the packaging directory. I'm fairly certain there used to be one in older versions. I'm groping now to figure out how to build rpms for Fedora 4, which I know is a little old but I don't have resources to upgrade the OS now. Was it intentionally removed? Mark

Wine help for newbie
Hi all - I have a few questions - OK, a million questions, but just a couple today. I hope this is the right list ... I migrated (finally!) from Win7 to OpenSuse 12.1 64bit, KDE4 a couple of weeks ago on a Dell Inspiron laptop dual core Intel cpu/2Gz, 4meg RAM. So in most things I am groping around in the dark. This distro included Wine 1.3.30. I successfully loaded my pet email client,

rpart v. lda classification.
I've been groping my way through a classification/discrimination problem, from a consulting client. There are 26 observations, with 4 possible categories and 24 (!!!) potential predictor variables. I tried using lda() on the first 7 predictor variables and got 24 of the 26 observations correctly classified. (Training and testing both on the complete data set --- just to get started.) I

chroot-ing users coming in via SSH and/or SFTP?
...running OpenSSH, and he himself is using Windows clients (TeraTerm and WinSCP) to access it, so the logical thing to do seems to be to have his clients send and receive files via SFTP or SCP. The users depositing files on the server shouldn't be allowed to see what one another are doing or to grope around on the system, so it'd be a good idea to chroot them into home directories, as is commonly done with FTP. However, OpenSSH (or at least FreeBSD's version of it) doesn't seem to have a mechanism that allows users doing SSH, SCP, or SFTP to be chroot-ed into a specific directory....

Installation problem, possibly RAID
I burned a DVD for CentOS 4.1. I booted from it and everything went fine for the graphical screen installation. I choose separate partitions for my /boot (hde6), / (hde9), and swap (hde12) areas. My /boot partition was ext2 and my / partition was ext3. I installed grub in my /boot partition successfully. I have a Boot Loader, System Commander 8.13 which controls the MBR. The installation then

pxelinux/memdisk booting MSDOS floppy image requires local floppy disk
I found that if I do not have a local floppy installed and enabled on my client, I will get the error 'Non-system disk' when I try to boot DOS floppy images. NT or Syslinux floppy images boot fine. If I enable the floppy in the BIOS, then it boots the DOS floppies just fine. Is this normal? Is there a workaround? There are MS-DOS images, so perhaps this is an MS-DOS limitation. --

Question about Samba 3.0.10 + OpenLDAP 2.1.29
Hi, This may be a silly question. I've got OpenLDAP 2.1.29 up and running on FC2, I imported passwd, group and hosts from NIS to LDAP server and we can authenticate with LDAP instead of NIS. We also have a Samba PDC running on another Linux box (FC2), it use smbpasswd as passwd db. So I am going to replace it with LDAP passwd db. I tried to configure Samba to use LDAP. but it didn't

R kicking us out
Dear R People: I am using R for teaching purposes in a large classroom. Each computer has its own copy of R. However, every once in a while, about half of us will get thrown out of R, for no apparent reason. By the way, it has happened in other classrooms as well. Has anyone else run into this, please? If so, how have you solved this problem, please? Thanks in advance! R for Windows
