off topic but need your pointers about statistics
Hi all, I apologize for this off-topic question but I need your help -- I know there are lots of experts here. As a lover and student of statistics, I am thinking of building a tree of various branches of statistics and keeping track of the greatest historical inventions/discoveries in statistics and the latest development of each branch. The goal is to understand in what context did the great inventions come out and then try to follow the greatest minds in terms of creating future significant inventions/discoveries in the statistics field......

greatest common divisor
Hello, Is there a function in R with which we could find the greatest common divisor directly? Or is there a funciton, which could help us to find the remainder of a division directly? Best wishes! multiple hexbin plots with varying greatest densities
Greetings: I have multiple hexbin plots with varying greatest densities. Right now, the data on each plot varies from 1-256 levels of density. The problem with that is that in Plot A the data are more scattered across a 2 x 2 grid whereas in Plot B the data are more concentrated in fewer cells. Hence, Plot A has a few very dense grid cells and plot B has no...

greatest common substring
...ot;Welfare_Group_1024", "Welfare_Group_1536", "Welfare_Group_160") I want to 'automatically generate a nice y-axis label for this data. A good candidate is something close to "Welfare Group". Is there an easy way to compute something close to the greatest common substring? It would be nice if it also works in this case: V = c("xxxWelfare_Group_1024", "yWelfare_Group_1536", "zzzzzWelfare_Group_160") Should I iterate through all possible substrings in the first element, to see whether this substring is part o...

The latest & greatest Routing (Rails Edge 4611)
Got a quick question regarding the latest and greatest: module ActionController module Routing SEPARATORS = %w( / ; . , ? ) Why is period (.) one of the separators? As it stands, the new routing code doesn''t recognize ''file.ext'' as the last component of a URL, which is sometimes defaulted to nil. See the generated c...

Leisure Suit Larry's Greatest Hits and Misses
I am now at the point where I have one more thing to install before I can scrap my Windows box - and it's Leisure Suit Larry's Greatest Hits and Misses. I have installed the DOS-based parts of it in dosbox, and also used sarien and freesci to handle some of it, but there is a significant part of this collection that needs Windows. Trying an installation with the default Windows version set to anything NT-based goes wrong: the ins...

Using names function
Just starting on my journey to learn R and the book I am using is "Using R for Introductory Statistics" One of the problems (page 15, 1.10) goes as follows: The monthly sales fig for 2002 were (2700, 2600, 3050, . . ). Using diff() find the month with greatest increase from prev month. I created a msales var: msales = c(2700, 2600, 3050 . . ) I named them: names(msales)=c("Jan", Feb", "Mar" . . .) to find the month with greatest increase from prev month: max(diff(msales)) I get the numeric value displayed when I execute the...

CentOS 5.2 yum repos old rpm
...would update them to 5.2.6, 5.0.51a-community, 2.2.9 respectively: # yum makecache # yum update Of course after some time, I realize that the CentOS 5 repos only have those versions as the latest rpms in the list. So my question is, how do I change my yum configuration to install the latest and greatest versions of rpms installed via yum? Latest and Greatest!
The MVP Bridge program is working once again. Waited months for this one to be fixed! Some more regression testing: Mixed-up-math (PK games -- nice math and other puzzles) no longer runs. Program starts but crashes out loading a control--most likely IE/Mozzilla equivalent. I have never succeded in accessing the network via WINE. Installing the mozilla control enabled this program and others

1.0beta to latest and greatest?
dear dovecot users, This is my first post and with a rather embarassing question. To soften the question up I just want to say I've been very pleased with Dovecot thus far and its low maintenance requirements - perhaps to pleased! I am running an ancient version of Dovecot, version 1.0.beta9. Do I risk corrupting indices etc by upgrading in one go to 2.1.2? Thanks for your input. Charles

Re-Send - Non-HTML - (Sorry) Samba and Solaris and Linux
Hello everyone, Just kind of a generalized question, and looking more for caveats than anything else. We're getting ready to implement the latest and greatest release of Samba on one of our Sun servers. Unfortunately, we haven't determined which one yet, but we only have two, so it's not a big deal. Anyways, I've set up Samba successfully on Linux on multiple occasions, the most recent being on a domain with a Win2k Server as the domain con...

Or find the greatest UID and do ++. Anyone has a good idea, how to fix this? rgds, Rauno Tuul

Backporting and Apache 2.0.52 is 4 1/2 years old
http://httpd.apache.org/security/vulnerabilities_20.html states that Apache 2.0.52 is 4 years old and the latest version is 2.0.68. i am no longer a httpd expert, but at least one of the security fixes involves XSS attacks via malformed ftp commands. I also realize that redhat / centos may patch things separately from Apache and that the sysadmin has a great deal to do with how secure things
