I have the firewall turned on my CentOS 5 box, but GRC is reporting that 631 is closed instead of stealthed. If the firewall isn't configured to allow that, then why might that be happening? Miark

Fedora change that will probably affect RHEL
...ny rate-limiting built into it, but it does limit the number of unauthenticated connections to 100 by default in EL7. Together, this means a small botnet could try 50 guesses at a single account?s password per second. The current non-policy allows abc1 as a password. According to: https://www.grc.com/haystack.htm ?that password can be brute-forced in about half an hour at 1000 guesses per second, or 4 days at 50/sec. Your 7-day window is too short, if you don?t institute *some* kind of password quality minima. Also keep in mind that the GRC calculator is assuming you?re brute-forcing it,...

Security advice, please
My LAN is behind a Netgear router, which does NAT. On the CentOS server I have fail2ban running. This morning my router reported 3 different IPs attempting to send UDP packets to port 38950, Since each address is only seen 4-5 times, I presume that fail2ban took over after that. GRC reports that ports are stealthed (port 143 was open, but is now closed), but then: Unsolicited Packets: RECEIVED (FAILED) ? Your system's personal security countermeasures unwisely attempted to probe us in response to our probes. While some users believe that "tracking down" the s...

controlling colour in Trellis histogram
...hout success. I want to make a histogram with conditioning on a factor, using Trellis graphics. However, I do not want any colours (only black and white) either in the histograms or in the strip. There must be some simple argument but I can’t find it. Here is my code so far: > histogram(~GRC.SLA|as.factor(species.type),data=group.means, + strip=function(...) + strip.default(...,style=1,factor.levels=c("Conifers","Trees","Herbs","Mo nocots"))) As a default, this produces the bars in a pale blue and the strip in orange-yellow. Thanks....

help with json data from the web into data frame in R

I know that there is a package for handling json data [1] but it assumes the data is in a local file but It is not clear to me how to request the data from the web in an R script and get the json data converted into a data frame
