include-from with different source points
Trying to automate backup of the following local mounts/directories to
a usb drive (/mnt/usbbackup); here's what's in my include file:
+ /home/gravyface/www/*
+ /mnt/datadisk1/music/*
+ /mnt/datadisk2/projects/*
If I run the following, nothing happens, so I checked the man and I'm
not specifying a source (I thought the include-from was the source):
sudo rsync --progress -avz --include-from=/home/gravyface/backup.list
/mnt/usbbackup/localbackup...

combining two models in one controller/view "set"
I''m going to take another stab at this question (my first one received
no replies):
I have two models:
Author
has_many: books
Book
has_one: author
I have two tables:
authors
id
...
books
id
author_id
...
I let the scaffolding fly and it created the CRUD goodness for each
model, as expected.
However, I want to have only one view/controller "set" for both
models; when I

What IDE for Rails on OSX?
Hi,
I''m using TextMate for rails development on OSX, but have reached a point
where I need to run in a debugger and be able to step through the code as it
executes. I have previously used the Eclipse Ruby plug in and another IDE
for ruby development on windows, but never figured out how to run a Rails
app in the debugger.
How are other textmate users debugging and what else is there on

[OT] - Career Advice
Hey everyone - I have a career-related question for you all.
I currently work full time as a Sr. Sys Admin, and have been doing
systems work for about 9 years. I have been doing web development
work on and off during this time, and have written quite a few
internal applications and scripts for several companies I worked for.
I have never worked in the full time capacity of a software developer

OT: Require e-mail during sign up process?
Sorry that this thread is a little off topic, but I''m looking for some
varying opinions on the subject and I think this group has a breadth of
experience on this matter :)
A little background info... the registration process for a web application I
am developing will be targeting those ages 13+ with the bulk of the users
being in the 13-25 age range. We are in the process of developing

Basic Auth in WEBrick
Yo all,
All I want to accomplish at this moment in time is simple password
protection around a rails application in development using WEBrick on
a custom port. Just one account would be fine.
I have done an extensive Google hunt for an example, but I all find
are code chunks for starting WEBrick such as:
realm = "Gnome realm"
start_webrick {|server|
htpasswd

Mongrel 3.15, Ubuntu and Park place (S3)
Hello. I installed under Ubuntu (Dapper) Park Place. I followed the
instructions given at the RedHanded site. I get the following mongrel
error when launching the application:
** Please login in with `admin'' and password `pass@word1''
** You should change the default password or delete the admin at
soonest chance!/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-0.3.12.5/lib/mongrel.rb:584:in

How to have a form within a form?
Say I am building a blogging platform, and I want to allow users to be
able to add an avatar without leaving the page, when they''re writing a
post. I need the avatar information to be included in the form for the
post. So for example, after a user adds a new avatar while writing a
new blog post, it would be available to be selected as the avatar to be
used for that post. What is

Programming with designers in mind
Gents,
We''re hard at work on a new Rails app. We''re a small group of
developers...not a web designer in the bunch. We know CSS enough to be
dangerous, but we shy away from the "softer" skills (all the while
envious of those with that capability).
We intend to grow our application in terms of functionality, but I need
to make sure we keep an eye towards

Drupal vs. Ruby on Rails
Hello all,
Maybe the $subj is a little bit weird (i.e. apples vs oranges) but it is
a situation i am facing at the moment: We are developing a small web
site which will be mostly a CMS (more or less) and my colleagues is
arguing for drupal, and i am for RoR.
Maybe i can formulate the question in a different way: when to use a CMS
(not necessarily drupal but e.g. Radiant CMS) and when to use Ruby

Survey: Favored Rails Production Environment
We''re trying to set up a colocated server for deploying a Rails
application or three. Right now I''m undecided between a PC-based
server running FreeBSD and an Xserve running OS X. I''ve never
colocated before so I''m wondering if anyone has stories, tips, or
could say what their preferred OS is for running Rails.
I''m also wondering how performance of

merging models/views with scaffolding
Allo,
Just started playing around with RoR/scaffolding and have been
impressed so far. However, it seems to create a 1:1 relationship
between Controllers and Models and the basic CRUD actions -- I need to
CRUD two models from the same views and actions.
I have:
Book model
Book controller, with create/edit/show/destroy/list actions and the
scaffold-gen''ed views.

APC Back-UPS XS1300 battery behaviour on test shutdown
Hi there,
Seeing an odd behaviour when running upsmon -c fsd to test my Raspberry Pi
(running Jesse Lite) setup as a upsmon master, attached via USB to an APC
Back-UPS XS1300.
The Raspberry Pi is plugged into the Master outlet on the APC.
The UPS clicks onto battery (and the fan spins up) for a few minutes, then
resets, then repeats again, while finally remaining on AC power afterwards.
The
