translating RoR framework into the Java environment
For a company study I am trying to come up with what would one need to replicate *grosso modo and at the functional level* what we get in Rails. This does not need to be an "equivalent" solution, just what a Java programmer would build upon, the canonical aggregation of components, the usual tools. My first fraft is: Struts -> C layer Hibernate -> M

dynamic IPSEC: Holy grail sighted
Hi, Thanks to some pointers from Christian Kratzer, I am now able to join the office VPN from a random WiFi hotspot. With the configuration files changes detailed below, from a public WiFi hotspot I can now use this 3 step procedure to login to the office VPN. 1) While at hotspot, boot up my -STABLE laptop. 2) Insert wireless card. 3) "rsh server" This procedure works for a DHCP

There's a remote code execution bug in glibc. My customer asked me this, so I now I can tell him that it its possible,   cheers,   BC

Wiki Access Request for Java How To's
...How To (I've set Cobbler up on Fedora in the past, but want to move this to CentOS, as well) To start, I'd like to add a Java section to the HowTo page, moving the current Java HowTo into that section and creating a few new ones. The first one I have is regarding Tomcat deployment of Grails (http://www.grails.org) applications. I'd also like to contribute to a CentOS 5.3/OpenJDK specific Java and/or Tomcat HowTo. Regards, Sean

Running Modern Warfare 2 on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty.
...from the Nvidea website. I have read the sticky about no sound. I have no sound right now. Modern Warfare 2 craps out with a "Direct X has encountered an error". If I can get this working in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty I will no longer have to boot into Windows 7 for anything. It is like the holy grail for me of Linux computing. Does anyone know why I am getting a "Direct X has encountered an error" dialog?

[virtio-dev] Zerocopy VM-to-VM networking using virtio-net
...th here is my view of networking performance on x86 in the > Haswell+ era: > https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/snabb-devel/aez4pEnd4ow Thanks. I've been thinking about how to eliminate the VM <-> host <-> VM switching and instead achieve just VM <-> VM. The holy grail of VM-to-VM networking is an exitless I/O path. In other words, packets can be transferred between VMs without any vmexits (this requires a polling driver). Here is how it works. QEMU gets "-device vhost-user" so that a VM can act as the vhost-user server: VM1 (virtio-net guest driver...

Julia
...rmulas in R.) If you want to know why Julia has attracted a lot of interest very recently (like in the last 10 days), as a language it uses multiple dispatch (like S4 methods) with methods being compiled on the fly using the LLVM (http://llvm.org) infrastructure. In some ways it achieves the Holy Grail of languages like R, Matlab, NumPy, ... in that it combines the speed of compiled languages with the flexibility of the high-level interpreted language. One of the developers, Jeff Bezanson, gave a seminar about the design of the language at Stanford yesterday, and the video is archived at http://...

Anti-CBQ Statements in Howto
I find the negative attitude toward CBQ to be distracting and non-professional in the HOWTO. I''ve re-read it for the first time in about a month and comments like "This can be configured in a variety of ways, which I do not understand. Use HTB" do not encourage me about the writer. This is not a personal critique, as I can imagine this being said on a personal website,

Mongrel and Sandbox
Z-Man, DHH recently said: "And [_why''s] latest work on sandbox looks stellar. Making it drop-dead easy to run multiple Rails applications in the same Mongrel process without conflicts. Thumbs up to both him and Matz for getting Sandbox on track for inclusion with the next Ruby release." Does that mean what I think it means - that one or more Mongrel processes may one day be

Would any deeper introspection of the history expressions be feasible, e.g. detecting statements that have no side effects, dead ends, etc. The holy grail would be something like "show me all the statements that contributed to the current plot" or the like. Use windbind to keep same passwords between NT4 DOM and linux email?
...way through setting up an email server for faculty and staff use at the school my wife teaches at, and while not a Linux whiz, am making good progress so far. The school has a NT 4 server which is used for domain authentication, and I am trying to grapple with whether I can achieve the "holly grail" of synchronized passwords between the email server on Linux and the NT server. Looking at using winbind it appears that there are two potential issues: 1. The usernames from Linux perspective will be DOM+USERNAME. I could get around half the problem this presents with email aliases, but user...

Is ZFS internal reservation excessive?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 zpool and zfs report different free space because zfs takes into account an internal reservation of 32MB or 1/64 of the capacity of the pool, what is bigger. So in a 2TB Harddisk, the reservation would be 32 gigabytes. Seems a bit excessive to me... - -- Jesus Cea Avion _/_/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ jcea at jcea.es -

parallel administration tool for PCs?
...key strokes and mouse events to all of them at once. For instance, do an install on the master and everything happens the same way on the other N machines. If something different happens along the way, the option to address that machine specifically would be provided. This one is sort of the holy grail for Windows administration, I'm not entirely sure that the Windows GUI even provides a place to hack in between the mouse and keyboard to achieve this. I already have a collection of tools for doing bits and pieces of this, but nothing that covers all of these bases: >From Samba there is s...
