Recommendations for consumer-grafe GPSes?
2. Recommendations? My use case is pretty typical. I have one Linux machine I want to protect, automated shutown is desirable, blackouts longer than a hour are very rare at my location (the last one I can remember was in 1993), brownouts are very rare and mild, but summer thunderstorms are common and can be severe. I'm a good match for your typical consmer-grade UPS. 2a. In 2009, what do

re(4) problems with GA-H77N-WIFI
Hello, I need some advice how to debug this issue ... Recently I got a new mainboard for a router, it's a Gigabyte GA-H77N-WIFI with two onboard re(4) NICs. The problem is that re0 works fine and re1 doesn't: It doesn't receive any packets. Tcpdump displays all outgoing packets, but no incoming ones on re1. Ifconfig shows the link correctly (100 or 1000 Mbit, depending on where I

ACPI "blacklist" question
Hello, I have recently updated a machine to 7-stable. ACPI doesn't seem to work correctly on this machine. With earlier versions of FreeBSD (including the latest RELENG_6), I got this line in dmesg: ACPI disabled by blacklist. Contact your BIOS vendor. And everything was fine. The box runs perfectly well with ACPI disabled. (I can't get a BIOS update because the mainboard is too

stable/9: Force ada1 to UDMA-33
Hello, I've got a (P)ATA disk in a special frame. The disk itself supports UDMA-100 (and has an 80-ribbon cable), but the frame isn't compatible with that. By default, FreeBSD negotiates UDMA-100, and the console starts to fill with ICRC errors. In the past, I used a patch to ata-all.c that enabled the following entry in loader.conf to force the disk to UDMA-33, so it worked fine:

LevelOne WPC-0301 11g Wireless CardBus
Hello, I bought a LevelOne WPC-0301 11g Wireless CardBus Adapter today. According to the box it is "v6". The ral(4) man- page mentions only v2, but that one is ancient and can't be bought anymore. So, enabling the debug sysctl gives this in dmesg: cardbus0: Expecting link target, got 0x0 cardbus0: <network, ethernet> at device 0.0 (no driver attached) cardbus0: CIS pointer

NTP problems
My server is supposed to be using ntp, with nothing changed from the defaults set up by CentOS5. However, daily I see log entries like Total synchronizations 2 (hosts: 2) **Unmatched Entries** sendto(193.6.222.20) (fd=21): Invalid argument: 1 time(s) sendto(141.89.226.2) (fd=21): Invalid argument: 1 time(s) Does this mean that ntp is failing? I assume so, and if so, how do I change

Vulnerability in vixie cron?
Hi, Recently there have been advisories and patches for SuSE and RedHat (and probably a few others) regarding a vulnerability in Vixie Cron. The details say that there's insufficient checking of the return value of setuid, which can lead to priviledge escalation and lets users run cron jobs with root priviledges. As far as I know, FreBSD also uses Vixie Cron (at least the cron(8) manpage

Cluster: understanding virtual IP
Hi folks, I have set up a cluster on CentOS 5.2 using /etc/cluster/cluster.conf - and it works fine. It's only purpose is to switch a virtual IP between two routers. Now the service is running, I can ping the virtual IP from outside - but this virtual IP is not bound to any interface. How does this work? Can I force the cluster to bind it to a certain interface? I need this because the

Script to strip chroot passwd file
Hello BSDers, I'm running Apache in a chroot jail with suPHP. It needs an /etc/ passwd in the chroot so that suPHP can setuid to the owner of the PHP script, but there's nothing that requires the passwords to be valid. Does anyone have a script strips passwords out of master.passwd, sets all shells to nologin, etc and writes it to the chroot etc dir? I've looked around but

[simon@FreeBSD.org: cvs commit: src/crypto/openssl/ssl d1_both.c dtls1.h ssl.h ssl_err.c]
Hey, RELENG_7 isn't -STABLE yet, so the issue mention in the commit mail beolow will not get a Security Advisory. This only affects applications using DTLS, and I doubt there are many of those, but users should still upgrade to get this fix, just in case. See the OpenSSL advisory for some more details: http://www.openssl.org/news/secadv_20071012.txt If anybody were wondering, and
