GPLv3 and Mac OS X
This may have been raised before and if so I apologise for not being able to find it. I was wondering if someone on the list can please explain the relationship that GPLv3 has in preventing Apple from distributing updated builds with their operating systems. I've read over the GPLv3 (I'm not lawyer or anything) and I would guess it has something to do with the patent agreements? I'll admit that I'm not too happy with the GPLv3 and think that, ironica...

Greetings!!! Could you please suggest ways to build clang/llvm without libstdc++? In short, to avoid using GPLv3 libraries or tools while building clang/llvm. Linking libsmbclient with GPLv2 Code
...connect to SMB shares, which uses libsmbclient. I was thinking about using libgit2 in my program: http://libgit2.github.com/ . This library is licensed as GPLv2 only, with a linking exception to link to any program without restriction. My understanding is that, since libsmbclient is licensed under GPLv3/later, and libgit2 is GPLv2 only, and since GPLv3 and v2 are incompatible, I can't do this without asking for permission from the copyright holders. (And yes, I do plan on distributing this program to others.) So, my question is this: would it be possible for me to obtain a license to link libs...

...code that also uses my wrapper also falls under GPLv2. It seems unclear if the FSF's position on dynamic linking in Python constitutes 'real' linking, but I'd rather just do what the Xapian team expects. Is it (reasonably) safe to assume that the library will *not* get upgraded to GPLv3 since copyright for various pieces belong to many parties? thanks, vic -- "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity." - Hanlon's Razor

Samba 3.0.37 license confusion
Hello Jeremy and samba maintainers, I am using Samba 3.0.37 and I am confused about the license. On one hand both the COPYING file in the 3.0.37 tarball and your website indicates that version 3.0.37 is GPLv2. http://news.samba.org/announcements/samba_gplv3/ On the other hand, in the 3.0.37 tarball, there are many files with GPLv3 headers without any exception. For instance, several file in source/client directory. So my question is if it is released under GPLv2, why there are so many GPLv3 license only files ? regards, Rong.

Using Dovecot code in a non-LGPL package
...it). The Apache License 2.0 is a permissive, non-copyleft license like the MIT License, but it adds a patent retaliation clause. See http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html for its text and http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/license-list.html for a short statement of its compatibility with GPLv3; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_License#GPL_compatibility has a little more. License-wise, there are two choices, if you're willing Timo: the modified Dovecot code could be released under GPLv3, which *is* compatible with the Alpine license - it would just mean Alpine+Maildir would be...

GPLv3 + MySQL + Rails
just wondering, if anyone has translated the GPL and MySQL AB legalese into real-world scenarios. it seems unclear what ''derivative'' or ''linked'' or ''distribute'' means - how much IPC or TCP traffic do you need before two components are as ''linked'' in terms of functionality as a dynamically loaded library? if you are
