how safe is it to rsync databases?
...opinions on the net muddy the issue. Tridge's PHD thesis mentions that people use rsync for replicating their databases to backup servers. i would have thought that that was OK if the DBM was shutdown during the backup...... But some people on the net like this: http://www.sanitarium.net/golug/rsync_backups.html Say: Why/When wouldn't you want to use rsync for backups? Databases: Rsync is a file level backup so it is not suitable for databases. If your primary data is databases then you should look somewhere else. If you have databases but they are not your primary data then ther...

Good email client to use with Dovecot?
...y because of various senders' misuse. When I want to look at a thread, I usually just sort on subject. > What's your archiving system, many > or few folders, flat or hierarchical? Archiving is achieved in my Dovecot Maildir tree. For fast moving folders like INBOX and my local LUG (GoLUG), every year I move this year's messages to, for instance, OLDFOLDERS->GoLUG->2015. I have somewhere between 75 and 200 folders, and tend to go about 4 levels deep in the hierarchy, although most of my most active folders are 1 level down from the account itself. For backup, I use rsync t...

rsync --link-dest won't link even if existing file is out of date
...> Also, I strongly agree with the previous posts relating to file > system snapshots. ZFS is just one file system which supports this > kind of system. I have also attempted to use btrfs in Linux for this. I even wrote up a presentation for my local LUG about it: https://sanitarium.net/golug/rsync+btrfs_backups_2011.html Unfortunately there was nothing but grief. The btrfs just wasn't stable enough and the btrfs-cleaner kernel thread drove performance into the ground. We eventually had to abandon it in favor of ZFS on TrueOS. As far as "fast box" goes we decided on 8G...

Good email client to use with Dovecot?
Hi all, When I use an email client, its purpose is as a window into my Dovecot IMAP, and as a mechanism to reply to and send emails. I don't do filtering or calendaring on my email client (filtering via procmail direct to Dovecot). What email clients are all of you using to look at your IMAP email? rsync - using a --files-from list to cut out scanning. How to handle deletions? (fwd)
...slowly reclaimed > by a kernel thread in the background. We are restricted in our use of filesystems to what is chosen for particular hosts, so smarter backups using advanced filesystems is a long way off. > > Here is something I wrote up about it a while back: > http://sanitarium.net/golug/rsync+btrfs_backups_2011.html Thanks - good stuff. It parallels some of the work we have done - I should have looked up your papers earlier. Our recycling of old backup directories gets around the performance issue of having to delete old backups - deletes can certainly take a long time, and we d...

Is there a howto/tutorial on backups/rsync that covers the use of hard and soft links?
There have been a lot of posts on the list lately about issues with hard links. It has been very interesting, but I don't understand it very thoroughly. I haven't used hard links for anything yet. I've used symlinks - not for backups, of course - and have seen them get broken or deleted in backups. Is there a tutorial anywhere that will explain how this works (assuming that the

securing rsync backup solutions?
For full system backup, rsync obviously needs to run as root on the machine being backed up For preservation of user/group/permissions info, rsync also typically needs to be run as root on the machine storing the backup - although there appear to be various ways to avoid this (e.g. using fakeroot -s, or running rsync inside a Xen VM which only stores the backup of one host) Can anyone comment on

rsync - using a --files-from list to cut out scanning. How to handle deletions?
Folks, We use rsync extensively for protecting data by making backups. Thank you to the authors and maintainers. Like many others, we use the --link-dest option to cut down on the space occupied by the backups. Unlike many others, we re-cycle old backup directories. Since most file systems change only slowly (ours average about 0.5% of files and about 1.5% of data being churned each day), a

rsync --link-dest won't link even if existing file is out of date
Feature request: allow --link-dest dir to be linked to even if file exists in target. This statement from the man page is adhered to too strongly IMHO: "This option works best when copying into an empty destination hierarchy, as rsync treats existing files as definitive (so it never looks in the link-dest dirs when a destination file already exists)". I was suprised by this behaviour

Hlink node data for 570645 already has path ...
When syncing one backup system (running dirvish, but that's not really relevant) to a second long-term backup system which uses btrfs snapshots, I get the following output: rsync: link "/parasite.oob.telegraaf.net/vservers-var-www/tree/elo/var/www/lokaalx/openx-htdocs/etc/xmlcache/.svn/prop-base/cache_etc-changes_schema-tables-core-12934.bin.svn-base" (in backup-aquagirl) =>
