Install Mariadb on Centos 7 fails
Folks
I'm having problems installing Mariadb in Centos 7.
Here's what I did:
0) Become root
1) Make sure that mariadb and mysql are NOT installed.
2) Delete residual libs
rm -rf /var/lib/mysq*
3) yum install -y mariadb-server
installed mariadb-5.5.50-1.el7_2.x86_64 from the Centos
'updates' repository
4) systemctl start mariadb
5) systemctl status mariadb

X2go server on Centos7, any success?
Folks
I have been unable to get X2go to work on a Centos 7 server. I have
tried both the out-of-the-box GNOME desktop and the Xfce as well.
In both cases, the view from the client is that the screen starts to
appear, then goes away. On the server, I see the following messages
in /var/log/messages (I have erased the user name and replaced it
with XXX). The server is running as a virtual

multiphasic growth curve analysis
Greetings R Help Group,
How does one effect a multiphasic logistic growth model with 4 phases (e.g. Koops 1986; Weigel, Craig, Bidwell and Bates 1992; Grossman and Koops 2003) with R.
Before writing to the group, the R help archives were searched, the web was searched with Google, Venables and Ripley 2002 was consulted, Pinheiro and Bates 2000 was consulted, Bates and Watts 2007 was bought and

[OT] TDD, Goats and Happiness (WAS: The Guilt List)

Wait, I thought happiness had something to do with goats and feeling
guilty about it. I''m confused. Again.
But I would second Dylan''s suggestion of seeing a video of TDD in action
w/ RoR. Having never tried this, it''s difficult to

Non R probability question
Dear R People:
Here is a non-R probability question, please:
There is a problem, originally posed from an American game show,
called "Let's Make a Deal."
A contestant makes a selection of one door, from Doors 1 through 3.
He or she knows that there are 2 goats and 1 car behind those doors.
Once the contestant makes the selection, say Door 2, then the host,
Monty Hall, tells him

Please be civil, guys. Different engineers have different skill
levels, so what. If someone asks for some help with the reference
implementation the least we can do is point them in a useful
direction. If

How should I denormalise a data frame list of lists column?
Hi,
I have a data frame where one column is a list of lists. I would like to
subset the data frame based on membership of the lists in that column and be
able to 'denormalise' the data frame so that a row is duplicated for each of
its list elements. Example code follows:
# The data is read in in this form with the c2 list values in single strings
which I then split to give lists:

print.citation, small bug?
Hi,
I use Sweave extensively in my consulting work. When submitting reports to
the scientists I work
with I like to use the citation function to reference any packages I use, to
give proper acknowledgement.
I noted in the documentation that a citation inherits from bibentry, and
indeed,

Multi-databases support
Hi,
While I was hacking ovirt-server, I have found that it's currently
restricted to Postgres DB. Even if I like postgres for serious work on a
server, I really prefer to hack/dev locally on a Sqlite or MySQL DB.
I have googled on rails in order to find a good answer for the "foreign
key problem" which forces OVirt to stay on pg. I have found a plugin on

rpmforge vs epel
I've been informed that rpmforge and epel do
not play well together and that if I use both,
epel should have the higher (lower numbered) priority.
Alas I had it the other way around.
rpmforge messed up my effort to get audacity.
I no longer need audacity,
but would like to fix the situation before some other problem crops up.
Would fixing the priorities and telling yum to
reinstall all the

CentOS 6 gcc is a bit old
gcc (GCC) 4.4.7 20120313 (Red Hat 4.4.7-11) is a bit old.
There have been major changes since then.
I'd like a newer version.
If I have to, I expect that I can install from source.
I'd rather not.
Is there a CentOS 6-compatible repository
from which I can get a newer version?
Does a standard CentOS 7 repository have a newer version?
Does a CentOS 7-compatible repository have a newer

Error message in dredge function (MuMIn package) used with binary GLM
Hi all,
I'm having trouble with the model generating 'dredge' function in the MuMIn
'Multi-model Inference' package.
Here's the script:
globalmodel<- glm(TB~lat+protocol+tested+
streams+goats+hay+cattle+deer,
family="binomial")
chat<- deviance(globalmodel)/59 #There we 59 residual degrees of freedom in
this global model.

How do I find whatever it is that wodim or
readom thinks is using /dev/sr0 and kill it?
So far, reboot is the only solution I've found that works.
I don't like it.
I want to be able to use my DVD-burner more than once without rebooting.
lsof has not helped.

gvim current directory
When I gvim a file from gnome,
gvim's working directory is always my home directory.
That is not what I want.
It is inconvenient for :vi , :r and :w something.else .
Is there a way to automatically cause gvim's current
directory to be the directory of the edited file?
I am aware of workarounds involving the command line.
I am aware of gedit.
I am looking for a way to give gvim the correct
