Problem testing R version 1.3.1 (PR#1143)
I have compiled R version 1.3.1 on a Linux system. No errors or
warnings are reported.
However, "make check" fails thus:

Date/time bug in 2.0.5a?
Is this just me????
Just installed 2.0.5a for testing.
Copying files (using explorer) from NT to Samba-2.0.5a (Solaris2.6
*and* Irix6.5)
fails to copy the date/time stamp correctly (1.9.18p7 is fine, from the
same NT system).

configure issue (PR#9379)
Full_Name: Gordon Lack
Version: 2.4.0
OS: Redhat Linux AS2.1
Submission from: (NULL) (198.28.92.5)
Not sure whether this is a configure issue or an R one.
It's only a minor issue, so this is really just FYI.
The code in configure checks for the version of makeinfo by splitting the
version string into a major and minor component. The tests on these assume they
are numeric.

Installed file locations (PR#1118)
R (1.3.1) appears to have a bug (well a mis-feature, I suppose).
It places architecture-specific and architecture-dependent files in
the same locations. This means that the common files cannot be shared
across installations on multiple architectures.
It would be nice if it could separate these under exec_prefix and
prefix and look in the relevant one for each file.

Buig in bin/R script (PR#9375)
Full_Name: Gordon Lack
Version: 2.4.0
OS: OSF1 v5.1
Submission from: (NULL) (198.28.92.5)
Changes to the bin/R front-end interlude script at 2.4.0 (cf: 2.2.0) have broken
R on (Dec/Compaq/HP) OSF1.
There are 3 occurrences of "${@}", but this is the incorrect syntax for adding
$@, as on older Bourne shells this will add an empty (but present) parameter.
The result is that the build

Bug in 2.6.1
I'm not sure what the code is trying to do, but the SGI Irix
compiler spotted this usage of an undefined variable.
In uidlist.c:
=======
static int map_uid(int id, char *name)
{
uid_t uid;
if (uid != 0 && name_to_uid(name, &uid))
return uid;
return id;
}
static int map_gid(int id, char *name)
{
gid_t gid;
if (gid != 0 && name_to_gid(name, &gid))

Bug in rsync 2.6.1
It fails to compile on Irix (compiler 7.2.1).
Whereas rsync.h has a #define for __attribute__(x) to remove it for
non GNUC and APPLE, this isn't used when compiling popt/popt.c, so it
produces an error as it doesn't like __attribute__((__unused__)) showing
up in the parameter list for poptAddAlias. popthelp.c also uses UNUSED.
A workaround was to copy the #define setting of

large file support in 2.6.1
The large file support in configure tests for working file-locking.
This may fail if you are building over NFS and the NFS locking isn't
working.
rsync doesn't actually use file-locking, so this test causes it to
remove large-file support unnecessarily.
A workaround might be to build on a local file system.

Bug: in 2.6.1
If, in a hierarchy which has been previously rsync()ed, I replace a
non-empty directory with a symbolic link the rsync will fail.
It does work if the original directory was empty.
It also works if I specify --delete (presumably since that deletes
first, so we end up with an empty directory).
But using --delete on a job by default isn't a good idea!
Is there some way to get

setuid/setgid bits
version: rsync v2.6.1 (+ a minor, unrelated patch).
I'm rsyncing files (not as root) and am happy (indeed, for what I
want, delighted) that the files at the target side end up owned by the
account doing the rsync.
However, I've found that if I have a setuid/setgid file on the source
side, the target file ends up setuid/setgid too (but under a different
id!). This happens whether

chdir (/root/tmp) failed - but why is it trying?
I'm seeing this in the log.smbd file for v3.0.28a.

This happens straight after a server startup if I connect to my HOME
directory (and I'm the only person using the server). It is noted in
the log (debug level 1) *before* the entry about me connecting to my home.
There is no mention of /root
