Linux SMB Mount utils patch
...s that ship with samba are designed to compile and run only with Linux 2.1 series development kernels. I'll _try_ keep this short and sweet while doing my best to explain what I have done, since I have a tendancy to ramble on. I have two boxes, one Linux with libc5, and another with Linux and Glibc2 (aka libc6). The Samba package itself compiles and runs fine on the libc5 box (although it was necessary to turn off optimization to compile with gcc 2.7.2.3). The glibc2 box was able to compile after adding "-DNO_SEMUN" to the compiler flags, since newer glibc2 includes don't defin...

Re: [R-SIG-Mac] Formatting of time zone for POSIXct
...with using '"%Z"' on most Linux systems. so after reading that, you get the correct result: > format(Sys.time(),'%H:%M',usetz=TRUE) [1] "15:57 EST" Now, the reason why I'm CCing this to R-devel is that in fact the datetime.c is somewhat weird for non-GlibC2 systems as tm.tm_zone is not initialized at all, which I suspect is a bug. Either the docs should state that %Z should not be used at all or I'd propose the following patch to make it work (warning, it's a patch against R-devel): Index: src/main/datetime.c =============================...

Could you checkout what needs to be done to make this work on Debian without errors? At least on the BuildBot th...

smbsh and smbwrapper - porting help needed
...ir, rmdir, vim, xedit, diff Things that don't work: - executing programs from the smb filesystem - mmap of files - output redirection from shells (eg. "echo hello > foo.txt") these things can all be fixed, but it will take time. So far smbwrapper is working on: Linux 2.0 with glibc2 (RH5.1) Linux 2.1 with glibc2 Solaris 2.5.1 Solaris 2.6 IRIX 6.4 SunOS4 It should be portable to a wide range of OSes, but each OS requires some work to do the port. If you want to participate in the development of smbwrapper then grab the latest code from the CVS tree and join the discussions...

Is this a security issue > or > more likely just growing pains for utmp and glibc? the format of utmp and wtmp in glibc2 aka libc6 is different from the format used in libc5 (which forked off glibc1 long time ago) this is not a real security issue (but it could have security ramifications like any other problem) your wtmp seems to be corrupted (mixed formats), the easiest "fix" is to erase the contents of...

Installation on SuSE Linux [was Re: Copyrights for R contributed libraries]
...ing about installing R on SuSE. If SuSE accepts .rpm packages you could try to install those from the CRAN archive. It may require a bit of work to get the libraries consistent with what the .rpm packages require. The big distinction is whether your system is based on libc5 or libc6 (also called glibc2 or GNU libc 2.0). A RedHat-5.0 binary requires libc6. It is usually fairly easy to install from the original sources. You could do that instead of trying to find a binary package. -- Douglas Bates bates@stat.wisc.edu Statistics Department 608/262-25...

smbfs
Hi- I'm working on a graphical interface to smbclient/smbmount/smbumount. As part of its operation, it will mount shares in directories under a user's home directory. I've run into a bit of a problem regarding the distributions of the mount utilities, specifically on Redhat 5.1/5.2. They are shipping an RPM with smbfs 2.0.1, which is known to have a security hole... so it should

Problem with cleaning utmp entry
...n someone ends ssh session (logout, or something) utmp entry for that user doesn't get erased from UTMP file. In 'finger' I can see a lot of multiplicied users that are not actually logged in. WTMP logging is also broken. (there is no entries at all) I don't have those problems on glibc2 systems (slack7), and I would be very happy if problem with libc5 and logging could be solved. Greetings PS. Part of ./configure that may be useful: checking for ut_host field in utmp.h... yes checking for ut_host field in utmpx.h... no checking for syslen field in utmpx.h... no checking for ut_p...

Guest access to samba server.
...edHat 5.0 boxes. I use a 'samba' user as the guest account, have enabled null passwords, and have set its password to NO PASSWORD. One more thing, when I 'smbclient -L machine' it asks for a password, but accepts an empty one. Also I'm getting messages in smb.conf about broken glibc2 - disabling sysv shared memory. If anyone can shed some light on that it'd be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sam Johnston

fix to lib/talloc.c
I added little changes to lib/talloc.c. With this patch, 1) calling malloc() within talloc.c will become 1/2( well, at least, nearly half ). 2) If you are using glibc2's malloc, then entire talloced space will be returned to system at talloc_destroy() time. # Original code has chance of keeping space for # 'struct talloc_chunk'. --- ./source/lib/talloc.c 2000/04/28 12:04:08 1.1 +++ ./source/lib/talloc.c 2000/04/29 14:23:16 @@ -55,25 +55,22...

Problems with Samba 2.0.6 and file modification times
